The U.S. State Department issues a travel warning -- to the world. It warns Americans that al Qaeda may be planning attacks in August, "particularly in the Middle East and North Africa," according to a statement. It prompted the U.S. to close 21 U.S. embassies and consulates this Sunday, including Afghanistan, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia, U.S. security sources say there is no single target and that the advisory applies more broadly to Western interests. But travelers at the Capital's largest airport, Washington Dulles International, didn't let the threat get in the way of their destination Friday.

The worldwide warning isn't out of the ordinary. The State Department regularly issues what it calls "Worldwide Caution" warnings to U.S. citizens, alerting them of the general potential danger of attacks around the world. One U.S. official who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Friday's travel alert was based on more specific information. The last "Worldwide Caution" was issued on February 19.

Election Commission declares Mugabe in Zimbabwe

The election commission declares that Robert Mugabe has been re-elected as Zimbabwe's president, with 61 percent of the vote.If the results hold that will allow the 89-year-old to extend his 33-year rule. But Morgan Tsvangirai, who leads Zimbabwe's Movement for Democratic Change or MDC party does not buy the results.

For one-year-old Xiao Liwu it's hard to know where to start. The panda cub was treated to a 3-tiered bamboo cake to celebrate his birthday. And he may be young, but he's also brave, according to San Diego Zoo's senior keeper, Jennifer Becerra.

New Zealand’s Fonterra, the world’s largest dairy exporter, has found an ingredient in some of its dairy products that contains a strain of bacteria that can cause botulism, with patients showing symptoms of nausea, vomiting and muscle weakness. In the worst cases, it can lead to coma and death if left untreated.
Gary Romano, Fonterra’S Head of NZ Milk Products, said, "We are very, very concerned about human health and we are doing everything possible to minimise exposure. I want to talk about people rather than brands."
New Zealand authorities have triggered a global recall of up to 1,000 tons of dairy products across seven countries. Products include infant formula, sports drinks, protein drinks and other beverages.
Countries affected besides New Zealand are China, Australia, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam and Saudi Arabia. China imports the majority of its milk powder products from New Zealand. Chinese authorities have asked domestic importers to recall any products which may have been contaminated by the bacteria and to ramp up scrutiny of New Zealand dairy products coming into the country.

Guizhou’s Tongzi County is experiencing its worst drought in 50 years, which has crippled this year’s crops. But villagers are still finding ways to harvest through the heat. More than 300 hectares of crops in Luo Qiao village of Liao Yuan town have been seriously damaged by drought. The corn can only be used to feed pigs. The price per kilogram of cabbage has increased more than four yuan, which was only one Yuan last year.
To cope with the scarce rainfall and continuously high temperatures, locals have begun to use a special sunshade that reduces water evaporation.
“In the past, we didn’t need to use this kind of sunshade, because there was enough rainfall. But the drought is so serious this year that the seeds won’t grow well if we don’t use the sunshade,” Hu Guangxiang, Vice Director of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry Bureau, said.
Zhao Jiuqiang, mayor of Liaoyuan town, said, “For the drought this year, villagers have lost a lot of confidence in replanting. We want to restore their confidence and increase their economic income by setting these examples of replanted fields. ”
The local government has invested about 700,000 Yuan, equal to over 114,000 US dollars, to purchase more pipes, seeds and sunshades. But with its meager water supply only able to support planting in 30 hectares of field, villagers know more is still needed.
