Protesters in Taiwan rally against nuclear energy. Hundreds flooded the streets of Taipei on Sunday to demand that the government halt the construction of a controversial nuclear power plant. The facility, already 90 percent complete, has sparked outrage among many Taiwan nationals. The protest comes just ahead of the inauguration of President Ma Ying-jeou.

Two years short of 70, Zhang Guosheng is planning to live out his days at this village care home in central China. But in a new scheme to deal with rural China's huge ageing population, he is in fact not yet the cared-for, but still the carer. His charge, 81-year-old Zhang Shouzhi, is near-deaf, immobile, and has no family in the village to care for him. And he's far too poor to afford professional care. This old-age care model began in their small village of Qiantun, and with government backing is set to go nation-wide.

Those aged over 60 account for around 14 percent of China's rural population. That's set to rise to more than 30 percent by 2028, official figures say. The costs of caring for all those ageing farmers could be too heavy a burden for the state to bear; so affordable innovations like this one in Qiantun Village are essential, says Wang Dewen of the World Bank.

At the same time, incomes and levels of social security in the countryside are worse. Because of this, in the future, the challenges posed by population ageing in the countryside will be much more serious than in the cities." At the moment, Chinese can only receive benefits in the area where they are registered, a major factor keeping many elderly in the countryside. But until this law changes and families can migrate together, villagers like those in Qiantun will just have to do the best with what they have.

College grads facing toughest year of job hunting

A record high number of new college graduates are pouring into the job market, but the number of job positions has dropped drastically by 15 percent compared to just last year. So far, more than 7 out of 10 college students about to graduate are still jobless. But these numbers are not just figures, they’re real stories of students in a desperate search for jobs.
This bachelor degree certificate used to be a magic key for Chinese graduates to find a high-paid job. But here, it is just little more than a permission to rent a bed in a crowded job-seekers’ dormitory. As you can see, this is actually a three-room apartment, but it’s divided into several beds. This is a shelter for over 20 youngsters looking for jobs.
If you didn’t look at their resumes, you wouldn’t believe that these are some of China’s elite college graduates.
Some are new graduates from outside Beijing, others are last-year’s leftovers chased out of school dorms.
They all face the same problem: without a job, they can’t afford a proper place to live.
Most of them have refused to talk to our camera, they don’t want their families to see what they are going through.
And what about their job prospects?
A graduation season, haunted by the threat of unemployment.
7 million college students graduating at once, a record high in human history.
And the jobless rate is running dangerously high, 7 out of 10 are still unemployed, one month before graduation.
Due to the rapid expansion of college admissions, the number of grads has almost quadrupled in just one decade, way faster than China’s economic growth.
As China struggles to transform its economy, GDP growth has been reduced from almost double digits to just around 7 percent. And every one percentage point drop means more than one million jobs wiped out.
But despite all the challenges, these students still choose to stick it out. They believe no matter how hard life is, there will be silver lining.
One suit and an old umbrella, are basically all they have as they rush between job fairs in Beijing. For them, there is only one choice to keep on going, in the hope that the next interview could be the one.

Hi, everybody. Over the past few months, I’ve laid out a series of commonsense ideas to reignite the true engine of our economic growth: a rising, thriving middle class.
The way I see it, there are three areas where we need to focus. One: making America a magnet for good jobs. Two: making sure our workers have the education and skills they need to do those jobs. And three: making sure your hard work leads to a decent living.
I’ve also been visiting cities across the country that are doing some interesting and creative things along these lines.
On Friday, I stopped by a factory in Baltimore that’s creating good jobs here at home by exporting digging equipment abroad.
I read with young kids in a pre-K program, where kids are getting a head start learning the skills they’ll need to succeed in life.
And I stopped by a program that’s helping folks in tough circumstances – especially low-income dads – get the training and guidance they need to find work and support their families.
That’s why I like getting out of the Washington echo chamber whenever I can – because too often, our politics aren’t focused on the same things you are. Working hard. Supporting your family and your community. Making sure your kids have every chance in life.
More than anything, the American people make me optimistic about where we’re headed as a nation. Especially after all we’ve been through the past several years. And that should encourage us to work even harder on the issues that matter to you.
In a little over three years, our businesses have created more than 6.5 million new jobs. And while our unemployment rate is still too high, it’s the lowest it’s been since 2008. But now we need to create even more good, middle-class jobs, and we need to do it faster.
Corporate profits have skyrocketed to all-time highs. But now we need to get middle-class wages and incomes rising too.
Our housing market is healing. But we still need to help a lot more families stay in their homes, or refinance to take advantage of historically low rates.
And our deficits are shrinking at the fastest rate in decades. But now we need to budget in a smarter way that doesn’t hurt middle-class families or harm critical investments in our future.
So in a lot of sectors, things are looking up. The American auto industry is thriving. American energy is booming. And American ingenuity in our tech sector has the potential to change the way we do almost everything.
In the coming weeks, I’m going to visit more cities like Baltimore, and Austin, Texas – where I was two weeks ago; places where Americans are coming together to strengthen their own communities and economies – and in the process, making this country better for all of us.
And I’m going to keep trying to work with both parties in Washington to make progress on your priorities. Because I know that if we come together around creating more jobs, educating more of our kids, and building new ladders of opportunity for everyone who’s willing to climb them – we’ll all prosper, together.
