The quake struck almost 40 kilometers southeast of T'ai-chung city. It also rattled the island's capital of Taipei. Taiwan sits near the so-called ring of fire region of seismic activity around the Pacific Ocean.

The Danube's water level reached a record high of 12.2 metres there on Monday, last seen in the 16th century. Most if not all of the city's streets are underwater, with rescue workers making their way through town by motorboat. Authorities have declared a state of emergency for the region.

Firefighters rush to the scene when a poultry slaughterhouse erupts in flames in northeast China. The death toll from the blaze has now been raised to at least 119. The President has called for an investigation. Local police say a gas leak may have caused the explosion. Many were trapped behind locked doors but some managed to escape.

More than 300 workers were in the plant at the time.Authorities say at least 60 people have been taken to the hospital. The exact number of people unaccounted is still unclear. China's record on fire safety has come under increased scrutiny. Fire exits in factories are often locked or blocked and regulations can be easily skirted by bribing officials.

A deadly blaze in northeast China’s Jilin Province has claimed lives of 120 people, with over fifty others injured. Latest reports coming in say that much of the fire has been put out and rescue work is underway.
The fire broke out early in the morning at the slaughterhouse of a poultry processing plant in Mishazi Township of Dehui City. An investigation into the cause of the fire has been launched.
Another fire in northeast China leaves more than a 100 dead.
It broke out early Monday morning at this poultry processing factory in Dehui of Jilin Province. This woman says more than 500 people were working in the factory at the time, and that she escaped with just one co-worker. This man told us that no one had the time to use fire extinguishers. He said that some doors were too far to reach, while others were locked.
At the nearby Fuyang hospital, the injured are being treated for burns and smoke inhalation. They recall what happened during those horrifying moments.
Power was also reportedly cut off after the fire. A stampede soon ensued as people rushed to get out. Doctors say that the more seriously burnt victims have been transferred to other hospitals in the province.
Tang Ronghua, director of Medical Department, Fuyang Hospital, said, "The most serious injury we have is a second-degree burn. The rest are minor injuries. We have transferred the most serious cases after giving them emergency medical care."
An initial investigation has blamed an ammonia gas leak for the fire. The complicated interior structure of the building and its narrow exits are complicating rescue efforts.
At a press conference Monday afternoon, local authorities pledged full out efforts to save the injured and find the cause of the blaze.
Zhao Xian, Deputy Director of Changchun Municipal Emergency Office, said, "Rescue work is still underway. The rescuers are trying their utmost to search for any survivors. We’ll do our best to treat the injured, identify the victims and investigate the cause of the incident."
Authorities also say that they’ll keep the public updated on the latest developments.
President Xi Jinping has urged local departments to save the injured, reduce casualty, and work on the root cause of the accident. Premier Li Keqiang also said life-saving is the most important task right now, and professional rescue teams should be sent to the area.

PRESIDENT OBAMA: Hi, everybody. Over the past four and a half years, we’ve been fighting our way back from an economic crisis and punishing recession that cost millions of Americans their jobs, their homes, and the sense of security they’d worked so hard to build.
And thanks to the grit and determination of the American people, our businesses have now created nearly 7 million new jobs over the past 38 months.
An auto industry that was flatlining is once again the heartbeat of American manufacturing – with Americans buying more cars than we have in five years.
Within the next few months, we’re projected to begin producing more of our own crude oil at home than we buy from other countries – the first time that’s happened in 16 years.
Deficits that were growing for years are now shrinking at the fastest rate in decades. The rise of health care costs is slowing, too.
And a housing market that was in tatters is showing new signs of real strength. Sales are rising. Foreclosures are declining. Construction is expanding. And home prices that are rising at the fastest rate in nearly seven years are helping a lot of families breathe a lot easier.
Now we need to do more.
This week, my administration announced that we’re extending a program to help more responsible families modify their mortgages so they can stay in their homes.
But to keep our housing market and our economy growing, Congress needs to step up and do its part. Members of Congress will be coming back next week for an important month of work. We’ve got to keep this progress going until middle-class families start regaining that sense of security. And we can’t let partisan politics get in the way.
Congress should pass a law giving every responsible homeowner the chance to save about $3,000 a year on their mortgage by refinancing at historically low interest rates.
Congress should put more Americans to work rebuilding our crumbling roads and bridges, like the one that collapsed last week in Washington state. We’d all be safer, and the unemployment rate would fall faster.
And Congress should fix our broken immigration system by passing commonsense reform that continues to strengthen our borders; holds employers accountable; provides a pathway to earned citizenship; and also modernizes our legal immigration system so that we’re reuniting families and attracting the highly-skilled entrepreneurs and engineers who will help our economy grow.
So there are a lot of reasons to feel optimistic about where we’re headed as a country – especially after all we’ve fought through together. We’ve just got to keep going. Because we’ve got more good jobs to create. We’ve got more kids to educate. We’ve got more doors of opportunity to open for anyone who’s willing to work hard enough to walk through those doors.
And if we work together, I’m as confident as I’ve ever been that we’ll get to where we need to be.
