Organizers of the upcoming 2008 Beijing Olympic Games will distribute the largest portion of total medals to athletes who win in track-and-field competitions.

Forty-seven gold medals will be awrded for these events.

Athletes from the Russian tracek-and-field team hope to win as many of the 47 gold medals as they can. With this goal in mind, they are undertaking rigorous training.

Yuriy Borzakovskiy was the gold medalist in the men's 800-meter final at the 2004 Athens Games. He will be competing in the Beijing Games.

"We've flung ourselves into full training to maintain good competing conditions."

The Russian Olympic Committee says there will be 113 track-and-field athletes among the country's total of 470 attending the Beijing Games.

The Russian team is aiming for a total of 90 medals, including 30 gold medals, in this year's event so it can rank in the top three on the Olympic medal list.
