Reconstruction work in Sichuan Province has begun after a massive earthquake ripped through the region on May 12.

The People's Daily on Tuesday said that reconstruction work should be carefully planned out and executed according to the specific characteristics of each region, instead of blindly copying the successful experiences in other regions.

For example, Tangshan, a city in northern China's Hebei Province, was destroyed by an earthquake 30 years ago, but the new city is well built now.

Tangshan people are now relating their expertise on reconstruction to planners in Sichuan, but only limited tips can be drawn from the Tangshan earthquake reconstruction, because the geography, geology and climate in these two regions are very different.

A similar case occurred in Lijiang, a city in Yunnan Province, which was hit by a strong tremor ten years ago. Now the city has become s a world-class tourist attraction.

The paper says tourist cities such as Du Jiangyan can draw on Lijiang's experience, but for other places like Shifang and Mianzhu, which are home to many large industrial and mineral enterprises, Lijiang's experience cannot be reproduced.

Reconstruction work is a systematic project, the paper says, and long-term development should be taken into account. The ultimate plan will need not only related departments' participation, but also public support.
