Today, we're going to look at seven different ways that we can use this very common phrasal verb.So, let's look at the top.
今天，我们来看一看对于这个常见动词短语的七种不同用法。我们从顶上来看看。
The first sentence says: "I can't make out what you're saying."
第一个句子， "I can't make out what you're saying."
In this situation: do you think you can understand what the person is saying or you can't understand what the person is saying?
这种情况下，你觉得你是能听懂对方说的话，还是听不懂对方说的话？
Well, if you look at the negative, it means that you can't understand.
如果你看负面，就是说你听不懂。
So one meaning of "make out" is to hear or see what a person is saying.
所以"make out"的一个含义就是听清楚某人说的话。
Or if you see an object in the distance and you can't really tell very clearly what it is, this means that you can't make it out or you can make it out.
或者说，你从远处看到某个东西，但是你看不清楚到底是什么，就是说你不能"make it out"。
So imagine you're watching a YouTube video and there's a person speaking in the background,
所以想象一下，你在看一个Youtube视频，有人作为背景音在说话，
and maybe they're speaking very low and you have to listen very carefully to understand what they're saying.
而且说话声音特别小，你需要很仔细才能听清楚。
So you listen, listen and you say: "Oh, I don't...No, I can't make out what he's saying, like I can't hear it."
所以你就仔细听，然后你说：“我听不清楚，听不到他们说的。”
Okay? Also, if you're looking at a picture and in one corner of the picture, maybe there's a small little object and you don't know what it is.
明白了吗？同样的，如果你在看一张图，一个角上有一个小东西，但是你不知道那是什么。
And somebody tells you that it's maybe a laptop, and you look at it, you say: "No, I can't make it out. I can't...I can't see it properly." Okay?
有人告诉你那可能是一个笔记本电脑，你看了看，你说：“我看不清楚。”
So this is one meaning.The second sentence says: "I made the check out to the president."
这是其中一个意思。第二句话，"I made the check out to the president."
Now, a check is a piece of paper that you give to someone when you want to pay for something. Right?
支票是你付钱的时候给别人的那张纸。
You write your name, you write the amount of money you're going to give to the person, the company, the organization.
你签上你的名字，写上金额，然后给某个人、某个公司或者组织。
So in this situation, you can make a check out to a person which just means you make the check payable to a person. Okay?
在这种情况下，你就是写一张支票给别人，让这张支票有了支付能力，明白了吗？
So this means to make a check payable - okay? - to someone.
让这张支票可以付给某人钱。
And you always...Usually we make out a check to a person. Okay?
我们都是给一个人，对吧？
The next one says: "Don't make out like you know the answer!"
下一个句子，"Don't make out like you know the answer!"
So imagine you're in a math class and you have a student who thinks that they know the answer to a difficult question
想象一下，你在一堂数学课上，有几个学生以为自己知道了某一道很难的数学题的答案，
so they pretend like they know the answer, but they really don't know the answer; they're just trying to look smarter than the other students.
所以他们就开始装着懂了这道题，其实他们完全不懂；他们只是为了表现的比其他学生更聪明。
So don't make out like you know what I'm talking about or don't make out like you know the answer; don't pretend.
所以就可以说，不要装着你懂了我在说什么，或者装着你知道了答案。
Okay, the fourth way we can use "make out": "How is your son making out at school?"
第四种，"How is your son making out at school?"
So we can use this to mean: how is your son progressing? Okay?
我们用这句话表示：你的儿子进步的怎么样？
So "make out" can also mean to progress or: "How is he doing?" as well.Okay, so to progress, do or perform.
所以"make out"也可以表达进步，或者“他做的怎么样？”就是进步，表现。
So for example, I can ask you: "Hey, how did you make out on your driving exam?", "How did you make out on your final exam for history?"
比如说，我问你：“你驾照考试表现怎么样？”或者“你历史期末考试考的怎么样？”
So: how did you do, how did you perform, how did you progress?
意思就是你表现的怎么样？
Here you notice we're actually using it in the progressive tense, right?
你能注意到我们用的都是进行时，对吧？
So how is he making out, how is he progressing or performing?
他现在做的怎么样？
Okay, number five: "I saw them making out at the party."
第五个，"I saw them making out at the party."
Now, in this situation...This is usually the most common way that we use "make out", and if you've seen it taught in schools,
这是最常见的"make out"用法，如果你在学校里学过，
if you've seen it taught in other videos, basically it means to kiss passionately.
或者在其他教学视频里面看到过，基本上说的就是热烈的亲吻。
Okay, so to kiss with lots of passion.Not just a normal, regular, soft kiss, but really passionate with the other person. Okay?
就是非常热烈的亲吻。不只是平常的轻吻，而是很有激情地和人热吻。
Number six: "I can't make out what it says at the bottom."
第六个，"I can't make out what it says at the bottom."
So this is actually similar to number one where you can't hear or see or understand, but this refers to very small details.
这个其实跟第一个意思说你看不清楚或者不明白很相近，但是这个说的是非常小的细节。
So you're reading, you're reading, you're reading and maybe you need glasses so at the bottom...
你在读书，然后可能你就需要戴个眼镜……你在看文件或者书的时候，
You look at the bottom and you say: "No, I can't make out what it says on the bottom", if you're reading a document or a book or something like this. Okay?
你会看着最下面的字然后说：“我看不清这最下面说的是什么。”
So in this situation, "make out" means to decipher small details.
在这种情况下，"make out"就是说看清楚小细节。
Okay, to notice a very small detail. "Like I can't make it out, I can't see it", in this situation.Okay, and: "We can't make him out."
就是要注意到非常细小的细节，“我看不清楚，搞不清楚”，就可以用在这种情况下。下一个，"We can't make him out."
So if you can't make a person out...Again, it's not very, very common to use it in this way,
你不能搞清楚某个人……这个用法不太常见，
but basically it means you can't understand this person; you can't figure out what type of personality they have. Okay?
但是说的就是你搞不懂某个人，你不能弄明白他们是哪种性格。
So this means to understand someone's character or someone's personality.
这个的意思就是搞清楚别人的性格。
Okay guys, so as you can see, there are many ways that we can use just one single phrasal verb.
好了，你们可以看到，这一个动词短语有好多种用法。
Today, that phrasal verb was: "make out".Now, let's just quickly review the different meanings.
今天的动词短语是"make out"。我们来快速复习一遍这些不同用法。
So: "I can't make out what you're saying."Like I can't understand you correctly, I can't hear you correctly.
"I can't make out what you're saying."我听不懂你说的话，听不清。
Maybe you have food in your mouth or maybe the audio quality of a video I'm watching is really bad.
可能是因为你嘴里吃着东西，或者我看的视频音质很差。

"I made the check out to the president."So I wrote the president's name on the check; I made the check out to him or her.
"I made the check out to the president."我把主席的名字写在支票上了，我付给他/她支票。
Number three: "Don't make out like you know the answer."Don't try to pretend. Right?
"Don't make out like you know the answer."别装。对吧？
Don't pretend that you know the answer."How is your son making out at school?" How is he performing? How is he doing?
别装着你知道答案。"How is your son making out at school?" 他表现的怎么样？
"I saw them making out at the party." I saw them kissing passionately at the party.
"I saw them making out at the party." 我看到他们在聚会上热吻。
"I can't make out what it says at the bottom." I can't see the very small detail.
"I can't make out what it says at the bottom." 我看不清楚细节。
"We can't make him out." We can't understand his character.
"We can't make him out." 我们弄不懂他的性格。
