The world is changed.

For none now live who remember it.

It began with the forging of the Great Rings.
这一切都从铸造魔戒开始
Three were given to the Elves.
精灵族得到三只戒指
Immortal, wisest and fairest of all beings.
他们能够长生不老也是最有智慧、最公平的种族
Seven to the Dwarf-lords.'
矮人族分到七只戒指

Great miners and craftsmen of the mountain halls.
他们很会挖掘矿坑是山洞的巧心工匠
And nine... ...nine rings were gifted to the race of Men who, above all else, desire power.
而人类…则分到九只戒指，他们比别人更贪图权力
For within these rings was bound the strength and will to govern each race.

But they were all of them deceived.

For another ring was made.

In the land of Mordor, in the fires of Mount Doom the Dark Lord Sauron forged in secret a Master Ring to control all others.

And into this Ring he poured his cruelty, his malice and his will to dominate all life.

One Ring to rule them all.

One by one...

the Free Lands of Middle-earth fell to the power of the Ring.

But there were some who resisted.

A Last Alliance of Men and Elves marched against the armies of Mordor.

And on the slopes of Mount Doom, they fought for the freedom of Middle-earth.

Victory was near.

But the power of the Ring could not be undone.

It was in this moment when all hope had faded that Isildur, son of the king, took up his father's sword.
就在这时候,当大家都失去希望之际，人皇之子埃西铎拾起他父亲的宝剑，
Sauron, the enemy of the Free Peoples of Middle-earth, was defeated.
黑暗魔君索伦，中土世界自由人民之敌终于被击败
The Ring passed to Isildur，who had this one chance to destroy evil forever.
至尊魔戒落入埃西铎手中，他只有一次机会永远摧毁邪恶
But the hearts of Men are easily corrupted.
但是人心很容易受到蛊惑

And the Ring of Power has a will of its own.
而且至尊魔戒力量不受到控制
It betrayed Isildur to his death.
它背叛了埃西铎，最后害死了他
And some things that should not have been forgotten were lost.
不该被遗忘的东西，也遗失了
History became legend, legend became myth.

And for two and a half thousand years, the Ring passed out of all knowledge.

Until, when chance came it ensnared a new bearer.

The Ring came to the creature Gollum who took it deep into the tunnels of the Misty Mountains.
至尊魔戒落入咕鲁手中，他把它带到迷雾山脉的洞穴中，

And there it consumed him.

It came to me.
它落到我手中，
My own. My love. My own. My precious.
这是我的, 我的爱, 是我的我的宝贝。
The Ring brought to Gollum unnatural long life.

For five hundred years it poisoned his mind.

And in the gloom of Gollum's cave, it waited.

Darkness crept back into the forests of the world.

Rumor grew of a shadow in the East whispers of a nameless fear.

And the Ring of Power perceived its time had now come.
于是至尊魔戒知道它即将再度现身
It abandoned Gollum.
它舍弃了咕鲁
But something happened then the Ring did not intend.

It was picked up by the most unlikely creature imaginable.
它被一个料想不到的人捡到

What's this?

A Hobbit.

Bilbo Baggins of the Shire.

A ring.

Lost!

My precious is lost!

For the time will soon come when Hobbits will shape the fortunes of all.

对于住在夏尔的霍比特人来说，生活好像自古以来就没有什么变化。夏尔人依旧在世界的一角，过着与世无争的生活。所有人都这么过着日子，他们衷心热爱着自己的家园和土地，每天劳动之后来上一杯绿龙啤酒，在酒馆里讨论路过夏尔的大人族们带来的消息，然后心满意足地抽着烟回家。上一期节目里主播Sally讲述了袋底洞的霍比特人比尔博巴金斯的历险故事，而如今，自从巴金斯先生历险归来，已经过去了60年。我是今天的主播潇雨，欢迎收听为你读英语美文。

今天我们的故事，开始于九月的一天我们的比尔博先生111岁的生日宴会。这一天，巫师甘道夫赶着一辆小马车，出现在了袋底洞的门前。

That very month was September, and as fine as you could ask. Days passed and The Day drew nearer. At the end of the second week in September a cart came in through Bywater from the direction of the Brandywine Bridge in broad daylight. An old man was driving it all alone. He wore a tall pointed blue hat, a long grey cloak, and a silver scarf. Of course, the old man was Gandalf the Wizard, whose fame in the Shire was due mainly to his skill with fires, smokes, and lights. His real business was far more difficult and dangerous, but the Shire-folk knew nothing about it. To them he was just one of the 'attractions' at the Party. They knew him by sight, though he only appeared in Hobbiton occasionally and never stopped long; but neither they nor any but the oldest of their elders had seen one of his firework displays. They now belonged to the legendary past.

在生日宴会上，Bilbo Baggins在众目睽睽之下竟然凭空消失了！原来，他已决心离开夏尔。

It was a fine night, and the black sky was dotted with stars. Bilbo looked up, sniffing the air. Gandalf remained for a while staring after him into the darkness. 'Goodbye, my dear Bilbo . until our next meeting!'
在甘道夫的帮助下，比尔博先生成为有史以来第一个成功放弃的魔戒的人。至尊魔戒对人而言有不可抵抗的诱惑力，一旦得到便无法放手，魔君索伦在戒指里注入邪恶的力量，一旦戒指回到主人手中，中土世界一切美好的事物将不复存在。比尔博离开后，这枚戒指，来到了侄儿弗罗多的手中。

One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them.
接下来的故事，是一个伟大的历险。巫师甘道夫，没落的努美诺尔后裔阿拉贡，刚铎的将领博罗米尔，精灵莱戈拉斯，矮人吉姆利，四位霍比特人持戒者弗罗多，他的朋友山姆、皮平、梅利。这一支由九个人组成的队伍承担着中土世界的命运出发了。他们要去到魔君索伦的巢穴中心，在魔戒铸造的末日山口，毁掉戒指。

当九人前往魔多时，敌人也开始行动了。
世界的战争在残酷地进行着，终于，这时弗罗多与山姆来到了魔多，在末日火山脚下，在尖锐的沙石中，已经筋疲力尽。
The hateful night passed slowly and reluctantly. Such daylight as followed was dim; for here as the Mountain drew near the air was ever mirky, while out from the Dark Tower there crept the veils of Shadow that Sauron wove about himself. Frodo was lying on his back not moving. Sam stood beside him, reluctant to speak, and yet knowing that the word now lay with him: he must set his master's will to work for another effort. At length, stooping and caressing Frodo's brow, he spoke in his ear.

两位霍比特人用尽最后的力气爬向末日山口，这时，魔都的黑门前聚集了一支军队。这是人类最后的军队，由来自北方的游侠、isildur后人，刚铎的伊力萨王统领。他们把希望给予人类，自己却未保留丝毫。他们知道有两位霍比特人正在末日山口为人类的命运而战，因此希望还未陷落。

弗罗多站在火山口上，他的意志已经到了极限，这时，他无论怎样也想把魔戒据为己有。Gollum尾随着他，伺机抢夺魔戒。
'I have come,' he said. 'But I do not choose now to do what I came to do. I will not do this deed. The Ring is mine!' And suddenly, as he set it on his finger, he vanished from Sam's sight. Sam gasped, but he had no chance to cry out, for at that moment many things happened. Something struck Sam violently in the back, his legs were knocked from under him and he was flung aside, striking his head against the stony floor, as a dark shape sprang over him. He lay still and for a moment all went black. And far away, Frodo put on the Ring and claimed it for his own.
这时，Gollum跃到弗罗多身上，一口咬下了他带着戒指的手指。
（原声：'Precious, precious, precious!' Gollum cried. 'My Precious! O my Precious!' ）
And with that, even as his eyes were lifted up to gloat on his prize, he stepped too far, toppled, wavered for a moment on the brink, and then with a shriek he fell. Out of the depths came his last wail Precious, and he was gone.
