本剧主要讲述住在纽约长岛的西佛一家的日常生活故事，是中国大陆较早引进的国外情景喜剧，在中国从1990年一直播出至1994年。1990年代初期一经播出就引发了收视高潮，片中迈克开朗调皮的形象为广大观众所喜爱。而剧中西佛医生对子女采取启发式教育的方式，也让观众得到启示。

tough break 霉运；恶运。
这是Jason在表示对Mike的话的赞同：Jerry只是由于运气不好才偶然撞上了一条狗。

To get away with 意思是做了坏事、错事没有被发觉，被责备或是受到处罚。最近伊拉克前总统萨达姆因反人类罪被法庭判处绞刑。显然，"He didn't get way with murder" -- 萨达姆没有从谋杀指控中脱身。

还比如美国中部堪萨斯州Elk市的居民抱怨说，当地一名男子经常开枪射杀居民的狗，甚至连Elk市市长家的狗也被他开枪打伤了。可是这个人至今逍遥法外, "The man who has been shooting dogs is still getting away with it." 为什么呢？ 因为有法律规定，农民有权为保护牲畜而杀死动物。不过狗一跑进他的地界就开枪，这未免有点过分。

Sinatra song 应该是指美国著名歌星和电影演员Frank Sinatra的歌曲。

fine line 细线（细微的差别）
She wished he would stop talking like that, but Minmei knew she was walking a fine line again.
她希望他不要再那么说话，可明美知道自己要小心行事才行。

Here's the deal. 的意思是：你看这样好不好，你看这样行不行。
