Finland’s shopping tourism hit as Russians stay at home
俄罗斯经济低迷 芬兰购物旅游遭遇打击

B~7ml2%a_rE,0W5!

Nestled in south east Finland, this town was the first stop in Europe for many Russian shoppers. For the past two decades Lappeenranta, just 30 kilometres from the Russian border, has been booming with tourists from the east. But now it's struggling. Signs advertise the latest sales but few shoppers roam the aisles.

Russia's weaker rouble and a sanctions dispute between the European Union and Moscow is taking a big bite out of the local economy. Out of two million foreign tourists visiting Lappeenranta a year, 1.5 million were Russian. But over the past three months that number has decreased by about 40 percent. Luxury retailers are now closing their doors and staff are being cut. Where the Russians used to buy designer handbags and fur coats now they buy food.

As the rouble continues to slide fewer and fewer Russians can afford the euro -- even to buy inexpensive goods -- and the town's important source of revenue will remain frozen.

Search resumes for AirAsia plane
亚航失联客机搜索工作继续

^|;![gk%qX

It's an international effort. Boats and planes from Malaysia, Singapore, Australia and Indonesia head out to an area in the Java Sea where the missing AirAsia jet, is believed to be. It's been one day since flight QZ8501 disappeared with 162 people on board. Rescue teams have been searching for any signs of the aircraft since contact was lost roughly halfway through the Indonesian flight to Singapore. The pilots had requested a course change due to bad weather but did not send any distress call.

Weak rouble rebounds, but Russians keep up seasonal spending spree
卢布疲软未影响俄罗斯人消费热潮

%7zZ~_.L@w-H~Cbne@%

Despite a weakening and wavering rouble, a Moscow shopping mall is packed full of shoppers. Russians rushed to the stores Thursday to grab last-minute holiday gifts and get their hands on durable goods. This comes as the rouble plunged dramatically last week because of steep declines in oil prices. But thanks to a government order for exporters to sell some of their hard currency revenues, the rouble on Friday rose to its strongest levels in more than three weeks. One shopper says the currency crisis is forcing him to be more creative. (SOUNDBITE) (Russian) SHOPPER, PAVEL, SAYING : "I am trying to prepare more items by hand. Everyone is pleased, because I'm showing more creativity than last year. When there is money there is less creativity. You go to the shops and select what appears beautiful to you. When there isn't money, then you think and use your imagination and are creative." Russians remain divided on who to blame for the rouble's recent plunge, but many are beginning to feel the effects. (SOUNDBITE) (Russian) SHOPPER, ANASTASIA, SAYING: "It will affect us drastically because we are traveling to Europe and everything is getting more expensive because of the euro currency. We will do all of our shopping there and now we are just buying necessities for the winter to not be cold." Russian authorities have taken steps to halt the rouble's slide and curb inflation, which after years of stability may threaten President Vladimir Putin's reputation for ensuring the country's prosperity.

Staff work overtime to ensure smooth transition of Beijing subway adjustment
工作人员确保地铁票价调整顺利过渡

While it may take some time for passengers to get acquainted with the increased fares, for the staff at Beijing's subway system, the preparation for this day has been a long time in the making.

YN^R9j5B!SU

This woman is proudly holding the very last 2 yuan subway ticket before Beijing’s subway system shut down on last night to prepare for a new era of pricing.

luD^exp]ux5]i

Just five hours to go, and some 14,000 machines need updates, it's a sleepless night for employees of the Chinese capital's subway system, like Xu Qunzhu.

ksxE4N|BV+nav-#

"We’ve had eight months of preparation for tonight. We have a lot of work to do. First we have to check and record the old parameters, and then enter the new ones. And then we have to double-check to make sure there are no mistakes," Xu says.

aaQS=oG84E%Q%Kfd]^

And after a full night's work, the moment of truth finally arrives, albeit a more expensive one. Subway rides are now distance-based, costing anywhere from three to nine yuan.

J~UmX0eKr#++TgzeE|

And figuring out how much money your ride will cost is pretty straightforward, just find your destination on the map and the number indicates the cost.

"From Jintai Road to Haidianhuangzhuang station, there are obviously different routes you can take. But we will only charge you for the shortest route, no matter which one you take, so it will always cost six yuan," says Gu Xuefeng, a Beijing subway staff.

But now matter how much preparation you make, there will always be some issues to iron out when the system goes live.

g!8*Gk(|pyIRb.

"We have already handled more than 20 incidents where the passenger's trip was longer than what they paid for. We expect we'll have to deal with a lot more problems come rush-hour tomorrow," says Li Hongxiang, a Beijing subway staff.

One new subway line and three new sections of existing lines were also opened today. Brand new stations will now facilitate popular destinations that were previously inaccessible by subway, such as the 798 Art District and Chaoyang Park.

Beijing's buses also begin implementing a new distance-based pricing system today.
