TEXT:After more than two weeks of sporting action the London Olympics has come to a close. Fireworks lit up the Olympic Park in east London as the torch was extinguished during the closing ceremony. The farewell celebrated the best of British music and fashion, with appearances from The Who, Queen and The Spice Girls. While thousands left the Olympic stadium for the last time, the party atmosphere appeared to leave a legacy. SPORTS FAN, JOHN BURLEY, SAYING: "Last year was (the London) riots, this year was just a riot. Tonight was absolutely brilliant, tonight you saw a different kind of flame, it was organised, it was enlightening." SPECTATOR AT CLOSING CEREMONY SUE, SAYING (English): "We really engaged (with the Olympics) when the torch came. And then we just all got sucked into it, and couldn't wait to come down. It was absolutely brilliant, absolutely superb. We're just overwhelmed by all the volunteers, the organisation, everything's been stunning - thanks, thanks, thanks." The United States came top of the Olympic table with 46 gold medals. In third place, Great Britain scored their best result for 104 years, winning 29 golds. The baton has now been passed to Rio de Janeiro, which will host the Games in 2016.

This broadcast, outside a train station in the capital of Pyongyang, attracted hundreds of people, who cheered on their compatriots in London. So I came here to celebrate the achievements of all athletes and share happiness with people from across our country." The isolated and deeply impoverished country has enjoyed its most successful Olympics in two decades. Its athletes have won four gold medals and two bronzes. One of those medal winners was weightlifter Kim Un Guk, who set a world record. UNIDENTIFIED WOMAN SAYING: "We were at a loss with happiness. Millions across Mexico got up early to catch the match on television. Some fans hope the historic win will unite the nation in the midst of a brutal drugs war. MEXICAN FOOTBALL FAN, ARMANDO MORA, SAYING: "They had it all for a win. I don't know, we are nothing then we show that we can. This is a beautiful moment for our country. Hopefully, this unites us. Let's stop fighting for something beautiful. It's worth it." Mexico's previous best Olympic performance was a fourth place finish at the 1968 Mexico Games.

【After Security Concerns, No Serious Breaches at Olympics】

TEXT:Some days at the Olympic Park there were so many people it was difficult to move around. That, and the many other venues around London and throughout Britain, might have been an attractive target for terrorists.
To prepare, organizers and the British government deployed a vast security system, with airport-style screening at all venues and a large police presence. The British military was on standby to respond to any terrorist attack. Officials said they had “no appetite for risk” but also did not want to create a “siege” atmosphere.
Still, when the security firm G4S failed to recruit enough civilian guards, officials called on the British Army to provide thousands of extra troops on short notice to help with routine screening and guard duties. The head of the organizing committee visited some of the soldiers at a temporary camp near the Olympic Park.
“They brought, of course, supreme organizational skills," said Sebastian Coe, chairman of the London Olympics Organizing Committee. "They brought their professionalism, they brought their humor, and they've done it with grace. And they've charmed a large, a large proportion, of the Olympic family."
Just before the Olympics started, security consultant David Rubens described the organizers as “not ready.” Now, he says the planning and execution of all aspects of the Games will serve as a model for future Olympics.
“To a certain extent they got lucky, but being lucky is part of the game and it’s a function of good planning. Everything except for G4 is actually a major success,” said security consultant David Rubens.
The most significant security incidents of the games, so far, involved a man who threw a beer bottle onto the Olympic track just before the 100 meter final, and an Indian woman who somehow marched with her country’s team in the opening ceremony. She even got a certificate of participation.
As the 2012 Games drew to a close, several senior officials gathered at a memorial ceremony to mark the 40th anniversary of the massacre of Israeli athletes by Palestinian militants at the 1972 Olympics in Munich. This year’s organizers were determined to avoid anything like a repeat of that, and in spite of, or perhaps because of, major concerns in the run-up to the Games, with two days to go they appear to have succeeded.

【How a 1959 Discovery Is Saving Premature Babies Today】

We told you last week about a study which found that more than ten percent of all babies worldwide are born too early. One common problem in preterm babies is respiratory disease. The lungs are the last organs to develop. But a medicine called surfactant can save babies struggling to breathe.

The story of this lifesaving medicine begins with a discovery in nineteen fifty-nine by a researcher named Mary Ellen Avery. She told this story in two thousand five to Children's News at Children's Hospital Boston, where she was the first woman to serve as physician-in-chief.

It was in nineteen ninety, when the government was in the process of approving an early surfactant called Exosurf. The attending doctor she was working with in the unit had some news for her.
