Ukraine defiant on national day, rebels parade captured soldiers
乌克兰阅兵活动庆祝独立日

H+h6Fk93;[X

Ukraine marked its independence day with a military parade in the capital Kiev. A message of defiance to neighboring Russia,which Ukraine says is funneling weapons to pro-Moscow rebels it's fighting in the east. The separatists countered with their own march -- by parading captured Ukrainian troops through the streets of their main stronghold, Donetsk. The counter marches come as intense shelling was heard around Donetsk this weekend. Nearby, government forces exchanged gunfire with rebels in Ilovaisk, a small town where both sides are pitched in fierce street battles for territory. Russian President Vladimir Putin meets his Ukrainian counterpart next week, in what diplomats say is the best chance for peace in months. But Sunday's rival events highlight the divide that needs to be bridged in those talks, if a compromise on Ukraine is going to be reached.

A U.S. journalist missing since 2012 is now free. Peter Theo Curtis was released by kidnappers in Syria Sunday to a United Nations representative. Qatari-owned Al Jazeera first reported the release, which was confirmed by the U.N. and the U.S. His release comes days after the Islamic State militant group released video showing the execution of American journalist James Foley. The same video also included a threat to kill another American journalist being held hostage, Steven Sotloff. The Committee to Protect Journalists estimates that about 20 journalists are missing in Syria.

Iceland raises volcano warning level after eruption
冰岛提高火山喷发预警

aVlJ&,M-^K3uw+!+

These scientists are flying over Iceland's Bardarbunga volcano, checking the surface. They're collecting data after a small eruption occurred under the icecap of this huge glacier, the Dynjujokull. The volcano warning level has been raised to red,the highest, and the area's already been evacuated. Deep underground a sharp increase in volcanic activity has been recorded over recent days. It's a reason for concern after ash from an eruption of another Icelandic volcano in 2010 shut down much of Europe's airspace for six days. Ten million travellers were affected. It's uncertain that the eruption will stay below the glacier so these scientists are closely examining activity. There's a significant risk that this eruption could also emit ash clouds. If that happens flights could be rerouted or even grounded and with the holiday season in full swing, that's not good news for travellers.

Hoverbike aims to take aviation to a new level
会飞的自行车提升至新水平

Deep in the English countryside, aeronautical engineers are perfecting a new generation of aerial drone. With increased stability and manoeuvrability, and able to carry a much heavier payload… it represents a significant leap forward in drone technology. This small drone, however, is just the 1/3rd proof-of-concept model for something much more ambitious. A full-sized quad-copter hoverbike that can be piloted by a person as well as flown by remote. It's the brain-child of engineer and helicopter pilot Chris Malloy, who first tested his concept with this bi-copter design.

,^-6XSp%01V

(SOUNDBITE) (ENGLISH) CHRIS MALLOY,MANAGING DIRECTOR OF MALLOY AERONAUTICS LTD AND ORIGINAL DESIGNER OF THE MALLOY HOVERBIKE, SAYING: "I've always been one to look at designs and see how I can make them better. And when I got my helicopter license I realised that the helicopter as adesign has a lot of improvements that need to be made, and one of them is safety and reliability. They're very complex machines. And my goal was to see where we could strip away the complexity and increase the safety and that's basically where the hoverbike came from." Engineers at Malloy Aeronautics are currently completing construction of the final prototype, with flight tests expected in a few months. The team first plan to launch the hoverbike as an autonomous unmanned aerial vehicle,before securing aviation certification for the manned model. Meanwhile, the smaller model has proved popular with drone enthusiasts around the world and is contributing revenue towards the design and production of the full-sized version. Marketing director Grant Stapleton explains that the manned hoverbike is designed to be flown like a helicopter and as such will be subject to the same stringent testing before a human can take to the skies. (SOUNDBITE) (English) GRANT STAPLETON,DIRECTOR, MARKETING AND SALES FOR MALLOY AERONAUTICS LTD, SAYING: "This hoverbike is a helicopter. It takes off like a helicopter, it flies and lands like a helicopter. It's designed to fly to an altitude of over 9,000ft and do so at over 100 knots. It's much safer to be away from the ground where there isn't anything to hit in the air, and that's why it is designed as a helicopter." That issue of safety is one area where the team says the hoverbike has a clear advantage over the helicopter.

Qv_ERJ%OOio^ppP-7

(SOUNDBITE) (ENGLISH) CHRIS MALLOY, MANAGING DIRECTOR OF MALLOY AERONAUTICS LTD AND ORIGINAL DESIGNER OF THEMALLOY HOVERBIKE, SAYING: "Rotor-strike is a major issue with helicopters this here eliminates rotor-strike by protecting the propeller blades from the ground and other airborne obstacles. The helicopter is inherently complex, the hover bike is very simple. So, from a complexity issue the hoverbike is safer. And it's built to be robust and flown in environments that a typical helicopter would have trouble with." While Malloy's vision of manned hoverbikes maybe years away from reality, the advances in drone technology that the team is making means that ambition is nearly within his grasp.

Weekly Address: Ensuring Equal Pay for Equal Work

o&||#x@~^bM*oM

WASHINGTON, DC – In this week’s address, the President underscored the importance of ensuring equal pay for equal work and highlighted the steps his Administration has taken to expand opportunity and narrow the pay gap that exists between men and women. Just this week – on Equal Pay Day – the President took action to increase transparency and make it easier to recognize pay discrimination. Women make up half of America’s workforce, and are increasingly the primary-breadwinners in American families. Ensuring that women are paid fairly is a commonsense step to grow our economy. That is why the President again called on Republicans in Congress to support the Paycheck Fairness Act and stop blocking progress that would benefit women – because when women succeed, America succeeds.

Remarks of President Barack Obama
Weekly Address
The White House
April 12, 2014

Hi, everybody. Earlier this week was Equal Pay Day. It marks the extra time the average woman has to work into a new year to earn what a man earned the year before. You see, the average woman who works full-time in America earns less than a man– even when she’s in the same profession and has the same education.

ZF==|D54drdiiR

That's wrong. In 2014, it’s an embarrassment. Women deserve equal pay for equal work.

RBWum9*UfR32*2(V4

This is an economic issue that affects all of us. Women make up about half our workforce. And more and more, they’re our families’ main breadwinners. So it’s good for everyone when women are paid fairly. That’s why, this week, I took action to prohibit more businesses from punishing workers who discuss their salaries – because more pay transparency makes it easier to spot pay discrimination. And I hope more business leaders will take up this cause.

53w%lK3hzv

But equal pay is just one part of an economic agenda for women.

3WC+T~@el*oP,p

Most lower-wage workers in America are women. So I’ve taken executive action to require federal contractors to pay their federally-funded employees at least ten dollars and ten cents an hour. I ordered a review of our nation’s overtime rules,to give more workers the chance to earn the overtime pay they deserve. Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, tens of millions of women are now guaranteed free preventive care like mammograms and contraceptive care, and the days when you could be charged more just for being a woman are over for good. Across the country, we’re bringing Americans together to help us make sure that a woman can have a baby without sacrificing her job, or take a day off to care for a sick child or parent without hitting hardship. It’s time to do away with workplace policies that belong in a “Mad Men” episode, and give every woman the opportunity she deserves.

xN(,7tuJkqM2KCll

Here’s the problem, though. On issues that would benefit millions of women, Republicans in Congress have blocked progress at every turn. Just this week, Senate Republicans blocked the Paycheck Fairness Act, commonsense legislation that would help more women win equal pay for equal work. House Republicans won’t vote to raise the minimum wage or extend unemployment insurance for women out of work through no fault of their own. The budget they passed this week would force deep cuts to investments that overwhelmingly benefit women and children – like Medicaid, food stamps, and college grants. And of course, they’re trying to repeal the Affordable Care Act for the fiftieth or so time, which would take away vital benefits and protections from millions of women.

Lu8+0(;0lx_

I’m going to keep fighting to make sure that doesn’t happen. Because we do better when our economy grows for everybody,not just a few. And when women succeed, America succeeds. Thanks, and have a great weekend.
