The Japanese island of Okinawa was battered by high winds and heavy rain as it bore the brunt of powerful Typhoon Neoguri.The tropical island 1600 miles southwest of Tokyo was the first Japanese area to feel the effects of the storm, which has been downgraded from a super typhoon but was still packing sustained winds of 180 kilometers per hour. Japanese officials had urged more than 100-thousand people to evacuate their homes, although Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said early damage reports were encouraging.

Guests of one hotel in Okinawa watched the storm from the safety of the lobby while nearly seven-thousand households lost power. One oil refinery had suspended operations and Kadena Air Base -- one of the largest U.S. military facilities in Okinawa was on its highest level of storm alert. The storm is expected to lose strength as it continues norward, but still cause heavy rainfall and possible landslides.

U.S. prosecutors plan to file more charges against Benghazi suspect

Ahmed Abu Khatallah, the suspected organizer of the deadly 2012 Benghazi consulate attack, could face more criminal charges.Prosecutor Michael DiLorenzo told a federal judge Tuesday that more charges will be filed because the government believes Khatallah was motivated by extremist ideology when he planned the attacks. The assault on the consulate left four Americans dead, including the U.S. ambassador. Khatallah has pleaded not guilty to a conspiracy charge.

Abdullah's camp rejected the results as a "coup" against the people. The Independent Election Commission, however, is calling for patience. The chairman maintains the results could still change.

And then there's the Argentineans - the distinctive blue and white stripes covering vast swathes of the city's iconic Copacabana beach. SOUNDBITE: Ivor Bennett, Reuters Reporter, saying (English): "90,000 tourists are expected here in Rio during the World Cup. They're not just here for the football of course, but also for beaches like this. Now according to the local authorities, they'll deliver a huge boost to the region's economy, to the tune of 450 million dollars." For Brazil as a whole, the estimates are impressive. 600,000 tourists, spending 3 billion dollars. Tourism minister Vinicius Lages. SOUNDBITE: Vinicius Lages, Brazilian Minister for Tourism, saying (English): "The money that is going to be generated through the games is not that important of course. But in the long-term, the infrastructure that is being built, the services that is being qualified, the projection of Brazil as a destination, that will be, in the long-term, the most important impact on our economy." Brazil is promising over 3.5 million new jobs to come from hosting the World Cup, along with a 0.4% boost to GDP every year for the next 5. But the evidence from the last two tournaments suggests otherwise - both South Africa AND Germany falling far short of expectations. Many expect Brazil to be no different - a Reuters poll predicting a bump of just 0.2. percent on growth. Pedro Trengrouse is professor of sports business at Rio's FGV university. SOUNDBITE: Pedro Trengrouse,Professor of Sports Management and Business, Fundacao Getulio Vargas, saying (English): "Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paolo, if you look at these two cities, you see that our hotels are always full, so we are always receiving tourists. So we are just changing tourists, because people are coming here for the World Cup, and some people who would come without the World Cup,are not coming now." Street vendors though are desperate to cash in - turning Rio into a sea of yellow and green. While souvenir and shirt sales are expected to rise, most retailers here are predicting revenues to plummet during the tournament -in some cases by as much as 70 percent. A glut of public holidays could mean industry suffers too - the sector predicting losses of up to 120 million dollars. Sergio Duarte is director of the region's industry federation. SOUNDBITE: Sergio Duarte,Director, Federation of Industries of the State of Rio De Janeiro, saying (Portuguese): "The other week only Monday and Friday were full working days, that's going to harm industry a lot. Some won't be able to stop production for example. Those industries will double their costs because they'll have to pay overtime. So there will be big losses for the sector." One thing Brazil is guaranteed is exposure - with half the world's population expected to tune in. The challenge now is to project a positive image. With scenes like this, it'll be hard not to.

THE PRESIDENT: Well, good afternoon, everybody. I am here with some outstanding teachers as well as Secretary Arne Duncan. And the reason we’re here is with the school year now over, it is a great time for us to focus on what we need to do to make sure that next year and the year after that and the year after continues to improve for students all across this country.
The one ingredient that we know makes an enormous difference is a great teacher, and we have four of the best teachers in the country here. But what we also know is that there are outstanding teachers all across the country, and Arne, myself, I suspect many of you had wonderful teachers that made all the difference in your lives and allowed you to be excited about learning and set you on a path for an extraordinary career.
Unfortunately, there are a lot of kids around the country who are not getting the kind of teaching that they need -- not because there aren’t a whole lot of great potential teachers out there, but because we’re not doing enough to put a lot of our teachers in a position to succeed. They may not be getting the training they need, they may not be getting the professional development and support that they need in the classroom. And part of our goal since we came into office, since Arne became Secretary of Education is how do we continue to improve how teachers can get better each and every year.
Of particular concern is the fact that typically the least experienced teachers, the ones with the least support, often end up in the poorest schools. So we have a problem in which the kids who need the most skilled teachers are the least likely to get them. And the most talented and skilled teachers oftentimes are teaching the kids who are already the best prepared and have the most resources outside of the school in order to succeed.
So what we’re trying to do today -- and Arne is going to have more to say about this this afternoon because we’re hosting a bunch of other teachers who are here in town -- is to highlight what we’re calling “Excellent Educators for All.” It’s going to be a program in which we ask states to take a look at where they’re distributing great teachers, what are they doing in order to train and promote and place teachers in some of the toughest environments for children. And what we’re also going to be doing is providing technical assistance, highlighting best practices, all with the intention of making sure that wherever a child is, anywhere in the country, they’ve got that opportunity to have somebody in front of the classroom or beside them guiding them, mentoring them, helping them learn.
And when I think about my own experience, the only reason I’m here in the White House is because I had some extraordinary teachers as well as a pretty extraordinary mom and grandparents. I think everybody sitting around this table probably feels the same way -- I suspect that’s part of what inspired some of these people to become teachers. We want to make sure every child has that access to excellent teachers and we’re very confident that if we can lift up what works, that there are going to be a lot of states that want to adapt to it.
So, unfortunately right now, they don’t necessarily have the information and, as I said, if we do nothing, if we don’t highlight the problem, then inevitably the kids who probably need less help get the most, and the kids who need the most help are getting the least. That’s something that we’re going to need to reverse not just because it’s good for these kids -- we know that if they’ve got a great teacher, they’re more likely to graduate, they’re more likely to go to college, they’re more likely to succeed in their career -- it’s also necessary for our economy, because we’ve got too many kids who are trapped in situations in which they’re not able to realize their full potential.
So I want to thank all these folks for being here, and I’m really looking forward to listening to them to find out what they think can be most helpful in promoting excellence in teaching.
