Russian President Vladimir Putin says his country does not carry out mass indiscriminate surveillance. In his live question and answer telethon address, Putin received a question from none other than former NSA contractor Edward Snowden. Snowden,who revealed last year that the U.S. government was collecting private communications from its citizens through the National Security Agency, is in Russia under temporary asylum.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) FORMER U.S. SPY AGENCY CONTRACTOR EDWARD SNOWDEN, SAYING (SPEAKING VIA VIDEO LINK FROM UNKNOWN LOCATION): "Does Russia intercept, store or analyze in any way the communications of millions of individuals, and do you believe that simply increasing the effectiveness of intelligence or law enforcement investigations can justify placing societies, rather than subjects, under surveillance?" The former KGB agent addressed Snowden with frankness.

And of course, special services should accordingly, within that circle, use modern means and react and fight the crime, including crime of a terrorist nature. And of course we do that too.But that mass surveillance, indiscriminate surveillance we certainly do not allow ourselves, and we hope, I very much hope,will never allow in the future."

Royals meet bushfire survivors Down Under

The British royals took in the sights of the Blue Mountains, near Sydney, where there were devastating bush fires last October. The duchess, who was wearing a Diane von Furstenburg wrap dress and wedges, was welcomed by cheers as she and her husband walked to a platform to take in the view of the Blue Mountains. Later they watched some students on an adventure training course abseiling down the rock face. William stood dangerously close to the ledge, peering down to the valley below. He then went on to meet Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott in Sydney. The couple arrived in Sydney with their son Prince George on Wednesday, after a tour of New Zealand.They will spend 10 days travelling across Australia, visiting famous landmarks and meeting locals.

With pro-Russian separatists still occupying government buildings in parts of Ukraine, the country's foreign minister says there is still a chance for diplomacy ahead of peace talks in Geneva.

However, the time is now, not only to express the concerns, but to look for a more concrete and adequate response to Russia's plans and actions."

The number we’ve been looking forward to all month is out. China’s economy grew 7.4% during the first quarter of 2014,beating forecasts that called for growth of 7.3%.
The last time the Chinese economy grew at this pace was during the third quarter of 2012 and a growth rate any lower than 7.4-percent, we’ll have to go back to the depths of the global financial crisis. CCTV correspondent Tracey Chang looks at what looms ahead for China’s economy and why slower growth may not negatively affect China’s employment picture.
After growing at an average rate of more than 10 % and lifting more than 500 million people out of poverty, the Chinese economy is facing a turning point.
China’s first quarter GDP does indeed show tamer growth but that’s typical given the long Lunar New Year holiday. Many economists also think that even much slower growth would NOT post a serious challenge to China’s employment situation.
Despite the upbeat GDP numbers, economic headwinds such as credit expansion, risks in shadow banking and volatility in China’s yuan still threaten the government’s goal of achieving quality and sustainable growth.
2014 is a crucial year for China both politically and economically. As the country enters a new phase of development, its prosperity has widespread implications for the world’s economic future.

"The ferry started to list, so we asked if we should escape now. But we were told to stay still. I’m so worried about the students in cabins," a rescued student said.
"It was very intense. The ship was tilted more than 45 degrees, and it was very tense," a rescued passenger said.
