Another mark of just how far things have changed was the participation of former Irish Republican Army guerrilla chief Martin McGuinness in a toast to the Queen. The conflict over British-ruled Northern Ireland claimed more than 3,600 lives from the 1960s until a peace deal largely ended it in 1998.

US marine dies in shooting

The shooting happened at the main gate of the Camp Lejeune military base in North Carolina. A U.S. Marine was shot and killed when a sentry's rifle went off. A base spokesman didn't say whether the shooting was intentional or not.

The DPRK's state news agency KCNA says, the country’s leader Kim Jong-un has been re-elected as the First Chairman of the country’s National Defense Commission, in the first session of the Supreme People’s Assembly held in Pyongyang this morning.
687 deputies, including Kim Jong-un, were elected during the 13th Supreme People’s Assembly. The deputies are expected to elect new commission members in the first session, and to approve the government budget for 2014. The Supreme People’s Assembly is the main organ of power in the DPRK. KCNA also says a meeting of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea was held on Tuesday.
Kim Jong-un presided over the meeting and various tasks were set to be completed. The meeting also discussed a proposal on forming the state leadership body to be submitted to the parliamentary session.

23 people have been killed and at least 45 injured in a bomb blast in the Pakistani capital Islamabad.
The bomb went off in a fruit and vegetable market on the outskirts of Islamabad. A police official said the bomb had approximately five kilograms of explosives hidden in a fruit carton.
In recent years, Pakistan has been rocked by explosions in cities, especially in the north-west of the country. Islamabad had remained relatively peaceful in comparison.
