A huge blaze destroys a garment factory outside the Bangladeshi capital of Dhaka. There were no reports of casualties, but the fire gutted a ten-storey building at Gazipur and spread to adjacent buildings. Around 18,000 people worked in the factory, but most had left before the fire erupted late Thursday night. Local officials say the blaze was started by angry workers, who blamed police for the death of a colleague. Garments are a vital sector for Bangladesh. The country's low wages have helped it become the world's second-largest apparel exporter after China. But this factory fire is the latest in a string of accidents in Bangladesh. And with global concern over poor safety standards, the government and manufacturers are under pressure to reform Bangladesh's 22-billion-dollar garment industry.

Another day of protests in Thailand. The target this time: the army headquarters in Bangkok. Around 1,000 anti-government protesters forced their way into the compound in an effort to shut it down and paralyse the government. Army staff watched, as protesters broke open the gate and drove their truck in. The demonstrators urged the army to come and join them, forcing Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra to resign.

The protesters say Yingluck's government is controlled by her brother -- the ousted former leader Thaksin Shinawatra who they claim is corrupt. They accuse her of using her party's majority to push for laws that many say would have allowed the return of Thaksin, without having to serve jail. And they're determined to keep the pressure on throughout the weekend.

Protests turn violent at Cairo University with at least one student killed as clashes broke out between supporters of ousted President Mohamed Mursi and security forces. The students were protesting against harsh new restrictions on the right to protest -- a move recently adopted by the military-backed interim government that ousted Mursi. Scores were injured in the uproar. Similar scenes in Alexandria as students protested over severe sentences handed down to female protesters. An Alexandria court jailed 14 women for 11 years for obstructing traffic during a protest by supporters of Mursi that took place late last month. Mursi was ousted by the military in July, following mass protests against him. Since then a crackdown on the Muslim Brotherhood has killed more than 1,000 protesters and led to the imprisonment of thousands.

Hong Kong's retailers are also heralding the start of the holiday shopping season by pulling out all the stops.
Animated reindeers and pine trees and even simulated snow. Yuletide couldn't get any more festive here at The Landmark-home to some of the world's swankiest luxury retailers.
There's no holding back as Hong Kong's retailers try to reverse a recent decline in citywide retail sales growth. In September, sales ground to their slowest pace this year.
But prospects for a profitable holiday season look good, based on a survey of so-called "purchase intentions" by Media Atlas Hong Kong.
And probably one of the hottest items this Christmas season is going to come in a box like this. Guess what it is. It's a smartphone. Purchase intentions for digital cameras and gadgetry, including tablets, are seeing a big jump for all income and age groups.
The same survey also shows purchase intentions for watches and jewellery, leather goods and footwear have remained relatively stable, or have declined. Despite that, overall consumer demand here looks encouraging.
"The figures are looking good and strong, so whatever we're expecting to happen during Christmas will also take place in the upcoming Chinese New Year whereas we all know, Christmas and New Year are actually literally just one month apart, so basically we do expect consumption confidence to carry on," Clare Lui, Executive Director of IPSOS Hong Kong, says.
A stone's throw away from the malls, Hong Kong's entrepreneurs are getting in the holiday spirit, too.
Spanish restaurant Taverna del Mar says more and more people have been booking for private parties as Christmas nears.
And after a year and-a-half in business, the restaurant is hoping to break-even before the New Year -says assistant manager Dennis Chung.
"August month has been slow, but Christmas we've had different strategies to attract customers, like group bookings, parties. We're trying to arrange for people to pick their own menu, and we can devise menus to suit their budget," Dennis Chung, Assistant Manager of Taverna Del Mar, says.
Most department stores plan to stay open an hour later, until 11 in the evening starting in December, to give people more time to do their Christmas shopping.
A lot of shopping would make this holiday especially festive for Hong Kong's retailers.

Shanghai’s new Free Trade Zone hosted its first auction on Sunday, with bidders spending more than 8 million yuan on dozens of clocks, watches and pieces of jewellery. But buyers and sellers say they would like to see some tax rules relaxed.
Bidders bought 73 of the 90 items on sale, with over 70% of the goods coming from overseas.
"We are here just to take a look. We haven’t known much about it. "
"This is the first auction in the Free Trade Zone. There are more items at auctions outside the zone."
No taxes or tariffs will be charged on the items as long as they stay in the Free Trade Zone. If they are moved to other parts of the mainland, buyers will have to pay a tariff ranging from 6 to 14% and a 17% value-added tax. Some bidders would like to see those charges dropped.
"It’s just the beginning and the detailed policy has not been published. I hope all the taxes can be exempted before we take the items out of the zone. "
Organizers of the sale say they are also pushing for change.
Hu Huanzong, Auction Organizer, said, "It is the national authorities who sets the tax policy. We are also reporting this issue to officials. We hope it can be changed in the future."
The zone will host at least one auction a month starting next year.
