About 200 anti-government protesters were still occupying the Thai finance ministry in Bangkok on Tuesday. The atmosphere was relatively calm after the occupation of the building by about a thousand who forced their way in the day before. There's an escalating campaign to oust Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra. It's plunged Thailand into its deepest political uncertainty since the bloody unrest of three years ago. Despite that many tourists arriving at Bangkok were either unaware or unconcerned.

Baghdad cafe bombing

At least 17 people died as two bombs exploded outside a cafe in the Iraqi capital on Monday. Another 37 have been wounded. It was the latest in a series of attacks on the few social meeting places still open in Baghdad. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the bloodshed. The attack happened in a mainly Shi'ite Muslim district in the east of the city. Sunni Muslim insurgents have regularly targeted cafes, restaurants and sports venues since the start of 2013. The latest bombing is part of Iraq's worst spate of violence in five years.

The United Nations announces a peace summit for Syria starting on January 22 in Geneva. With more than 100,000 dead in the civil war in Syria since 2011, the summit will mark the first direct talks between the government of President Bashir al-Assad and the rebels looking to overthrow him. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said the goal the so-called "Geneva 2" conference will be transitional government in Syria.

Two internet firms--Tencent and Qihoo met in Beijing’s Supreme Court Tuesday. Qihoo is accusing Tencent of abusing of itsdominant position in the market.
It is the first internet anti-monopoly case heard by the Supreme Court since the anti-monopoly law was released six years ago. But it’s not the first time the two firms have gone to court. The three year old battle is over whether Tencent used its leader position to block users from using Qihoo’s software. The government had stepped in to stop the dispute, but the war of words in the media continued. Now the two firms are fighting it out in court. If Qihoo wins, Tencent will need to pay 150 million yuan, or 25 million U.S. dollars to Qihoo, making the most expensive settlement in China’s internet history. The trial wraps up Tuesday.
The Qihoo vs Tencent case has a very high profile because the two companies are so publicly at loggerheads, also because it’s so rare to see an anti-monopoly case in the internet industry. Let’s listen to one legal expert’s opinion.
"The abuse of a dominant position refers to a firm, which has a monopoly role in a certain industry, suppresses its competitors through pricing and other market measures. / To judge if a firm has a dominant position, it is necessary to clarify the range of the market, which we call it the related market. / If a firm abuses of a dominant position is a related market, then it needs to compensate its competitors’ losses, generally it should be economic compensations." Said Qang Yong,associate professor of School of Humanities and Social Science of Tsinghua University.
The main argument is about the definition of market-- Qihoo thinks it should be China’s mainland, where Tencent’s QQ products have 90% of the market. But Tencent says the relevant market should be the global market--where its market share is not dominant. The two sides will argue over this in the trial.

Heavy snow continues to hit most parts of northeast China, causing rail, road traffic disruptions and flights to be cancelled.
On Monday, ten expressways in Heilongjiang Province were closed, eight flights were cancelled, four airports were closed, and 16 trains were delayed. Roads in 36 cities and counties were covered with ankle-deep snow.
In Qitaihe City, snow piled up to almost half a meter high in places. Jilin's meteorological office issued an orange blizzard alert for the province Monday.
The National Meteorological Center said parts of Heilongjiang and Jilin provinces will continue to see snowfall of up to 35 millimeters from Tuesday, accompanied by strong winds and blizzards. Temperatures in Jilin is forecast to drop to below 14 degrees Celsius.
