Violence disrupts Kosovo election
Violence at polling stations in northern Kosovo has hampered council and mayoral elections in the country. A group of people wearing masks stormed into three voting centres in the ethnically divided town of Mitrovica, throwing tear gas and smashing ballot boxes. Mayoral candidate Krstimir Pantic, who himself was attacked last week, described what happened.
(SOUNDBITE) (Serbian) CANDIDATE FOR MAYOR OF MITROVICA, FROM CIVIC INITIATIVE "SRPSKA", KRSTIMIR PANTIC, SAYING: "They started smashing ballot boxes, throwing ballot papers around, insulting members of the election commission, and one older woman was seriously injured, because one of the attackers hit her with chair. We heard that one woman had also been injured, her leg was broken, and this shows the bestiality and arrogance of the attackers."
Serbia had called on Serbs in northern Kosovo to take part in the election for the first time, with the EU holding out the prospect of membership talks - slated to begin in January - as a reward for Belgrade's support for the process. But turnout by Serbian voters in the region was just seven percent- and coupled with the violence is a clear indicator of lingering resistance to integration with the rest of the country.
Kerry arrives in Saudi Arabia
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry arrives in Saudi Arabia late Sunday where he was met by Saudi Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal. The kingdom has become frustrated with Washington's perceived inaction in Syria, and is concerned about its diplomatic engagement with Iran and lukewarm attitude toward the military-backed government in Egypt. A senior Saudi prince last month warned that the kingdom could "shift away" from the United States, suggesting a major strategic change after decades of close military and economic cooperation. In Washington, officials saw the threat as mostly rhetoric. Kerry will meet King Abdullah Monday.
Thousands protest amnesty bill
Thousands gathered in the streets of Bangkok to protest the passage of a draft bill that could allow the return of polarising former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. Members and supporters of Thailand's opposition Democrat party held signs and shouted slogans as they passed through the city centre. The group says the bill is an attempt by the ruling Puea Party and current Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, Thaksin's sister, to cover up Thaksin's crimes that led to his ouster in 2006.Thaksin has been living abroad since 2008 to escape corruption charges. The bill now moves to the upper house where it will be debated before another vote.

Apple's new iPad on sale in China
Apple’s fifth generation of iPad went on sale around the world Friday, including here in China. But if first day sales are any indication, the iPad Air might not be the hit previous models have been.
By 7:30 this morning, half an hour before the Apple store in downtown Huangpu District opened, there were already people waiting in line to buy the latest iPad. But the line was shorter than those for the launch of previous models, and most of the eager buyers were loyal Apple fans.
"I have an iPad4. And my girlfriend has an iPad mini. We want to buy an air today. It’s good."
The new model weighs 28 percent less than the iPad 4 and is only seven millimeters thick. But the screen size is the same.
At a digital plaza with several authorized Apple resellers, some shoppers said they are in no hurry to buy the new model.
Pierre-Armand Fievet, Shanghai Shopper, said, "What’s the reason to buy another iPad? Maybe lighter with retina screen, it’s a better screen. But my iPad is Ok. I can work and follow the news on my iPad. For me, it’s enough."
Shi Meiqin, Shanghai Shopper, said, "I will see if its function and appearance have big breakthroughs. I have Apple’s previous series. But I think the new ones in recent years didn’t have big changes, especially in its appearance."
Vendors say sales were slow this morning.
"People are more rational now compared to the times when iPad3 and iPad4 were launched. IPad is different from iPhone. It’s not necessary in life." Shanghai vendor Shi Qinxiao said.
"It’s not so popular as before. Apple has more competitors such as Samsung and Android system. They are also user-friendly and cheaper." Shanghai vendor Huang Shaodong said.
One industry expert said that the new iPad is not only lighter, but also has a faster processor and higher definition screen.
But he says that doesn’t guarantee strong sales.
"The new iPad has breakthrough in industry design, for it’s very thin, even slimmer than the utra-thin cellphones. But iPhone still has a larger market, because of the difference of the using environment and using method." Gu Weiran, Pchome. Net, said.
Gu said that the new generation iPad mini is expected to sell better, as many people prefer a smaller tablet. The iPad mini 2 with a higher-definition screen will go on sale at the end of this month.
Israel drone manufacturing booms
The Drone market is booming worldwide, moving so quickly that aviation experts predict unmanned aerial vehicle sales will soon take the largest market share of all aircraft sales. The front-running drone exporter is, surprisingly, not the U.S., it’s Israel.
In the world of new age surveillance and cutting-edge military technology, UAVs are the path of the future unmanned aerial vehicles, or drones, outfitted with advanced radar, cameras, satellite communications, infrared sensors and missiles can be put to use for everything from spying on neighbor countries to executing precision hits on targets Within the realm of unmanned systems, Israel is the world’s top exporter.
A report released earlier this year by international consulting firm Frost and Sullivan cites Israel’s Unmanned Aerial System exports at four and a half billion dollars between the years 2005 to 2012. The top clients are the UK, Brazil and India.
For a tiny country - population eight million - elevated export numbers are attributed to several factors. Main competitor, the United States, probably produces more drones, but strict export limitations and internal supply demand cut down on numbers of drones being shipped out. And Israel offers potential buyers options they can’t get anywhere else.
With prohibitive price tags - 140 million dollars for this Global Hawk - interested clients can sample the technology and pay by the hour, week, month or year and return the drone when the contract expires. UAV demand is expanding, and incorporating drones in civil realms is growing. Experts say Israel’s continuous upgrade and innovation in response to market demand keeps the country’s UAV industry in a front-running, competitive slot.
The next level is domestic aviation - unmanned cargo movement and farther down the road, pilotless commercial flights.
