Apple investors are a tough crowd these days- the company's earnings beat forecasts- as did revenues. Apple sold more iPhones than ever for the September quarter- and iPad sales were up as well. Mac sales were better than expected. Apple raised their 4th quarter guidance. And even signaled a strong holiday season. But the stock reaction was one of indecision- it fell immediately after the report- only to regain ground later on. Alex Gauna covers Apple for JMP securities:

Margins are also a concern- they continue to fall, as do profits. But its cash pile remains strong at $147 billion- as does pressure from investors like Carl Icahn to boost its buybacks. Apple gave back 7.8 billion to investors through dividends and other means. And said on the call following the earnings release, it's not going to consider any new moves until the new year. Which is fine with Gauna:

I'd like to see the stock working because innovation is back, because Apple is coming out with wow types of products, wow types of breakthroughs in terms of new usage models. But we are not seeing that, so it does have a fortress balance sheet. I'd like to see it put to use being more innovative- things like Apple TV where they are fast ceding initiative to companies like Netflix to Amazon Prime that I mentioned. That should be an Apple market."

Home resale contracts tumble

Contracts to purchase previously owned U.S. homes fell by the most in more than three years in September - in a sign the softer economy and a rise in mortgage rates are hurting the housing market, says the National Association of Realtors. The NAR's Pending Homes Sales Index, based on contracts signed last month, plunged 5.6 percent; the fourth monthly fall in a row. Contracts fell across all four major regions. It was the largest one-month drop since May 2010, when a home-buying tax credit was expiring, bringing the index to its lowest since December. The industry trade group says the drop hints that existing home sales will be down this quarter and flat going into next year.

Shooting suspect prompts police standoff

Police rush to the scene of a standoff in Arlington, Texas. SWAT team officers are negotiating with a shooting suspect who has barricaded himself inside an apartment building.This resident had to crawl out of his bedroom window to safety.

European lawmakers are in Washington to gather more information on the massive surveillance efforts by the US National Security Agency.
The lawmakers are meeting senior US government and intelligence officials in the three-day visit, to explore possible concessions from the US. They say trust across the Atlantic has been broken.
After meeting with House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers, the European Parliament’s foreign affairs committee Chairman Elmar Brok, says counter-terrorism cooperation must continue, but that European privacy must be better respected. He stressed that failure to resolve the crisis would affect negotiations over a US-Europe trade agreement.

The United States is scheduled to halt combat operations in Afghanistan by the end of 2014, leaving behind troops for support only. Can Afghanistan’s brand new army and the police really stand up to the Taliban? CCTV correspondent Maeva Bambuck caught up with General Sakhidat Keftan. As the commander of an Afghan National Army unit controlling three provinces, he’s spearheaded operations in some of the country’s most dangerous areas.
Brigadier General Sakhidat Keftan is directing a joint operation in the Ghorband District of Parwan, north of the country’s capital, Kabul.
Under his command, elements of the Afghan National Army, - joined by the national police - are driving out the Taliban. They took back control of the road, leading from Kabul to Bamyan.
Now, they’re chasing their adversaries into the mountains.
There isn’t a single foreign soldier here. Afghans are fighting on their own.
In three days, they surrounded the insurgents’ hideout. Taliban forces had been firing from there, near a derelict phone tower, using its control room to store their weapons.
The army came prepared.
Using Russian-made artillery, they demolished the weapons stockpile and regained control of the area.
But something else an airstrike provides, that a ground offensive doesn’t, is the element of surprise. The Taliban saw them coming.
The heads of the army, the police and local intelligence officials are still learning to coordinate their offensives.
But Brigadier Keftan tells us he has no doubt that Afghans can secure the country on their own.
