Much of Syria under blackout after attack on gas pipeline
Syria has been in the shadow of war for two and a half years, but on Wednesday much of the country was under a literal blackout. It happened after rebels reportedly attacked a gas pipeline that feeds a regional power station. One Damascus resident who wanted to remain anonymous said "The whole city just went dark". Amateur video posted online purports to show the capitol Damascus during the blackout as flames, reportedly from the pipeline, burn in the distance. Reuters cannot independently verify the video. But a monitoring group that using sources from both sides of Syria's civil war said the explosion was caused by rebel artillery on a gas pipeline, near the international airport outside Damascus. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights also said other parts of Syria were also experiencing power outages, including coastal cities in the west and parts of Aleppo province in the north. Meanwhile, the fighting continued on Thursday in the southwestern city of Deraa. Amateur video purports to show rebels detonating a car bomb there, in a district said to be a stronghold of a government militia. More video, which Reuters can't verify, purports to show rebels shelling a government tank. The fighting in Syria has claimed over 100,000 lives and no military or diplomatic end to the conflict appears in sight.

A plane fighting bushfires in the Australian state of New South Wales crashes, killing its pilot. The plane was dousing water in bushland just south of Sydney. The accident comes as the military faces criticism for starting one of the major fires. The fire service says an investigation has found a fire was ignited by live ordnance.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) NEW SOUTH WALES RURAL FIRE SERVICE COMMISSIONER, SHANE FITZSIMMONS, SAYING: "The fire investigation was conducted. We worked in concert with New South Wales police. We worked in concert with the military. We went out, I won't go into detail of the investigative technique. The fire investigators visited the location. They identified the cause and location, and it was a result of a detonation on the live firing range."
The military says it is cooperating with investigators. Thousands of firefighters on land and in air have been mobilized to tackle the fires, which have quickly spread in the hot, dry weather. Wednesday was a very dangerous day because of the high temperartures. Thursday has brought cooler weather and some residents were able to return....only to find their homes reduced to rubble.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) BLUE MOUNTAINS RESIDENT STEPHEN CLOSE, SAYING: "Yes, yeah, of course, we rebuild. We've lived here for 33 years. We've never had our house destroyed before. I figure if we've got another 33 years, we should be alright." More than 60 fires are still burning and more than 200 homes have been destroyed.

SOUNDBITE: Florentijn Hofman, Dutch artist, saying (English): "People are just crazy about this rubber duck and are connecting all over the world with each other by loving and sharing happiness. It's an artwork and this here in Beijing is only a small part of the artwork because it is a global artwork where rubber ducks all around the world appear and connect people."
Hofman's rubber ducks have already visited Hong Kong, Pittsburgh, U.S.A. and Sydney, Australia, among others. And for the Beijing duck's sendoff, Chinese action film star, Jackie Chan was on hand to offer some advice.

London housing prices jump 10%
In London, analysts are warning of a potential bubble in the UK capital’s booming housing market. Home prices in London have risen sharply by ten percent in the past month. It follows the launch of a new government scheme to help first time buyers which some people say could be making the problem worse.
Most people in Britain aspire to own their own home. Making Property a major driver of the economy. Part of the reason the government launched ’Help to Buy’ aimed at breaking a bank lending drought.
Help to Buy applies to houses costing up to $900,000 dollars, first time buyers need only a five per cent deposit. The UK government guarantees another 15%. But a survey out this week from Rightmove, Britain’s biggest website property agency, has added to worries the scheme may be creating a London bubble. Rightmove’s survey of asking prices in the capital shows a jump of over 10 per cent between September and October. An annual rise of 13.8 percent. With more cash chasing a static property market, even members of the government have urged caution with Help to Buy.
Nick Clegg, British Deputy Prime Minister, said, "Of course we need to be vigilant, of course we need to moderate it, even turn it off."
London though isn’t typical of the UK, where asking prices generally have risen at 2.8%. In London, an apparently insatiable demand for prime inner-city property, driven by the world’s super-rich, has forced a typical price to more than $3.5 million dollars.
The middle classes moving to former trouble spots like Brixton in South London--where prices now push the one-and-a-half million-dollar mark-- wine bars and sushi restaurants alongside market stalls catering for West Indian tastes.
Alex Wheatle, writer of former Brixton resident, said, "It’s changing, the demographic is changing rapidly because the only people who can buy property here are those with money."
“Perhaps London’s property prices are not quite in a bubble yet, but figures from the Council of Mortgage Lenders - the people who put up the cash to buy a house - have warned that lending is at its strongest in five years and much of that is down to the government’s Help to Buy scheme, CCTV correspondent Richard Bestic said.
