BlackBerry gets a $4.7b deal
Just when things looked like they were hitting bottom-BlackBerry has a deal. Fairfax Financial- its biggest shareholder- will pay $4.7 billion dollars for the smartphone maker, taking it private. That works out to $9 a share for the Canadian company. Just last week BlackBerry warned it will report a quarterly loss of nearly a billion dollars. Sales will also be much worse than forecasts. BlackBerry is also laying off 4,500 workers- more than a third of its workforce. According to analyst Jack Gold "It could provide them with cover to re-architect the company even more than they are now. Can BlackBerry ultimately survive? That's not as clear. " Shares, which had plunged on Friday, rose on news of the deal.
Egyptian court bans Muslim Brotherhood, seizes funds
It's back underground for the Muslim Brotherhood. An Egyptian court has banned the party from engaging in any activities and has also seized the group's funds. The decision comes after two months of unrest following the overthrow of then-President Mohamed Mursi. So far, some Egyptians are welcoming the court's decision.
(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) EGYPTIAN CITIZEN, SAMEH SAMIR, SAYING: "It is a correct decision 100 percent. The group that sheds the blood of their fellow Egyptians or sheds the blood of anyone must be an illegitimate group and a terrorist group. They killed youths who were in their prime years in Sinai and took Egyptians' money. My opinion is that this is 100 percent a correct decision."
Others, however, are criticizing the court's decision in fear that some Brotherhood members will lose faith in peaceful resistance and take up arms against the government. The Brotherhood won parliamentary and presidential elections after veteran autocrat Hosni Mubarek was overthrown in 2011. Previously, the Brotherhood had been outlawed in the country for much of the group's history.

(SOUNDBITE) (Urdu) PAKISTAN'S INTERIOR MINISTER, CHAUDHRY NISAR ALI KHAN, SAYING: "Which religion and which law gives permission to do such an act? Then they call it right? Seven children died, 37 are wounded out of which 11 are in critical condition."
In the past few months, violence has been on the rise in Pakistan, despite the Prime Minister's attempt to tame the insurgency by launching peace talks with the Taliban. Just a day before, a separate church attack killed dozens.

Election committee declares Merkel winner
The head of Germany's election committee has announced that Angela Merkel has won 41.5 percent of the vote in Sunday's general election. The result has been a resounding victory for Merkel's Christian Democrats, despite the party falling short of an absolute majority.
Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservative party has won Germany’s election, but finished just short of an absolute majority.
The head of the election committee has declared the final results, with Merkel’s CDU bloc leading with 41.5 percent, trailed by the opposition Social Democrats or SPD with 25.7 percent.
The Green Party won 8.4 percent of the vote, and Left party 8.6 percent.
But Merkel’s pro-business coalition partner of the past four years, has for the first time, been ejected from parliament since the post World War Two period.
The Free Democrats failed to reach the necessary 5 percent to be included in the parliament.
The next thing for Merkel is to put together a coalition government, possibly with the left-leaning Social Democrats or - less likely - with the environmentalist Greens.
But either way, it would likely take several weeks of difficult negotiations before any coalition is finalised.
Despite the challenges ahead, Merkel celebrated what she called a "super result" with her supporters in Berlin.
Merkel said, "I don’t have a lot to say. I’m simply saying thank you again. We showed that everybody is in a party mood. All generations are represented. I wish everyone a beautiful, beautiful evening. Today, we are going to party, tomorrow, it’s back to work!"
Recent polls gave Merkel popularity ratings up to 70 percent.
She has pursued a hard-nosed course in the eurozone crisis, insisting on spending cuts and economic reforms in exchange for bailouts to struggling countries.
Merkel has gained a lot of credit for steering Germany away from the economic fallout from the crisis, leaving the economy largely unscathed.
