New Zealand baby milk scare grows
Supermarket employees remove baby formula from the shelves in Petaling Jaya after a Malaysian company issued a precautionary recall Monday. Danone Dumex's formula uses whey protein concentrate from New Zealand dairy giant Fonterra, which announced it had found toxic bacteria in some products that could cause botulism. Despite this, Malaysian officials said Monday there was no cause to ban milk products from New Zealand just yet.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) MALAYSIAN MINISTER OF HEALTH, SATHASIVAM SUBRAMANIAM, SAYING: "We are in touch continuously with the New Zealand authorities for information and we will act accordingly to the information we receive. So, our aim is if there is any chance that a contaminated source has already reached us we will ensure the recall of that product." Fonterra said contaminated concentrates in milk powder and sports drinks had been sent to China, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand and Saudi Arabia. The company has been testing its facilities for contamination since last year, but only discovered the harmful bacteria in July, which prompted China to restrict Fonterra whey imports.
Chinese parents are furious at yet another milk powder scare. New Zealand company Fonterra said botulism-causing bacteria has been found in some of its products. Fonterra said an unsanitary pipe at one of the company's processing plants was contaminated with the bacteria. But added there is no ban of their products in China, as the bacteria would be killed during processing. Many Chinese consumers buy imported infant formula after hundreds of babies fell ill in 2008 by domestic milk powder tainted with chemical melamine. But now many feel no brands can be trusted.
(SOUNDBITE) (Mandarin) 28-YEAR-OLD FATHER OF ONE-WEEK-OLD BABY, ZHENG DEJUN, SAYING: "My baby has just been born, and we have been using this brand (Domex) because we thought it was a good brand. I felt very angry when I saw the news yesterday, because this could really hurt my baby. As parents, we want our baby to be healthy, so I want to buy milk powder that we can trust. But now foreign products aren't any good either." Fonterra said that majority of the affected products have already been contained and the problem will be resolved within two days after all contaminated products have been recalled.
Prison riot leaves three dead in Honduras
Security is tightened in Honduras after a riot in one of the country's main prisons left three inmates dead Saturday. The latest prison violence came as a report by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights said that most prisons in the country were being controlled by inmates. Police were also on hand at a hospital where some of the injured were taken in case of gang attacks. Saddled with one of the weakest economies in the Western hemisphere, nearly 70 percent of the population live in poverty. Many see crime as their only option. Nearly half of the country's prisoners have not been convicted and many wait years before they even get a hearing.

Cars in Shanghai catch fire due to high temperatures
Mr. Liu works at an air conditioner maintenance shop in Shanghai. As the city continues to bake during a record heat wave,Liu’s shop gets dozens of calls a day.
"Air conditioners can get heat stroke, too. If it runs for a long time and the out door temperature is too high, the rubber coat of the wires can melt. That will put the circuit at risk of shorting out." said Mr. Liu.
High temperatures have also led to vehicles catching on fire. This surveillance camera footage shows that on Friday morning in Shanghai, a car burst into flames just a few minutes after being parked by the side of the road.
It took fire fighters 20 minutes to put out the blaze. Police say, there were three cases of car catching on fire in the city on that morning alone. The city has seen over 60 cases so far since May.
Local governments in south China are doing all they can to limit the impact of the heat wave. In Chengdu, the capital of southwest China’s Sichuan province, the government has installed water spraying taps on the walls at tourist spots. During summer, the taps spray water mists every 15 minutes, to cool down people who pass by.
According to weather forecasts, the heat wave hitting most parts of South China, is not likely to ease until mid August.

Service sector boosts China's non-manufacturing PMI
China has released July's figures for the country's non-manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index, which saw a slight up-turn from the previous month.
July’s PMI stood at 54.1 percent, up from 53.9 percent in the previous month. A reading above 50 indicates expansion, while one below 50 implies contraction. The improving non-manufacturing figure is in line with China’s manufacturing PMI, which also rose slightly in July.
Analysts say the increase indicated a good start for China’s economy in the second half of the year, with a robust service sector being the main driving force for non-manufacturing activity. China’s non-manufacturing PMI is based on a survey of about 1,200 companies across 27 industries.
