But the marks were here on my neck, not on my face, so I didn't consider the possibility they could have been caused by my beauty products."

Miyuki is not alone. Pale skin is very popular in Asian countries and many cosmetic companies sell products to evenly lighten the skin. Thousands like her are now suffering from discolouration after using skin whitening products from Japanese cosmetics giant Kanebo. Early in July Kanebo voluntarily recalled 54 cosmetics containing the chemical Rhododenol across 11 Asian countries and the UK after complaints. The company has apologised and is investigating the problem but for people like Miyuki it comes too late. Dematologists say getting rid of the unsightly blotches is extremely difficult.

Talks were held at an iftar dinner to break fast during the holy month of Ramadan on Monday evening at the State Department. For the first time in nearly three years both sides agreed to come to the table with cautious expectations. Earlier in the day Israeli chief negotiator Tzipi Livni told Reuters she's hopeful but not necessarily optimistic.

Taken away on a stretcher, one of at least twelve victims of an apparently random attack. A man in Hong Kong assaulted colleagues with a cleaver on their way to work on a company bus on Wednesday morning. According to state media, passengers managed to restrain the man, but not before a dozen people were wounded. About 20 people who work for a fruit processing firm were on the bus. The man had no previous record of mental illness, local media reported. Investigations are underway to ascertain whether the assailant was targeting specific passengers.

This summer in Hangzhou is sweltering. The umbrellas are not for rain, but shade. People are trying everything to stay cool.
The cave by the mountain was built in the 1970s as an air-raid shelter. But now it’s a perfect place for locals who want to escape the heat. Inside the cave, it’s a pleasant 22 degrees Celsius.
The weather is too hot. It’s not good and it’s expensive to stay at home because you need to have the air conditioner on.So I’d rather spend my whole day here.
And others have found a way to keep cool while they learn. Last Sunday, the number of visitors at Hangzhou Library exceeded 20,000, that’s triple the Library’s average number of visitors before the heatwave hit.
It’s very hot outside. But it’s comfortable and cool in here. It’s a good environment for study. I can focus better here than at home.
Hangzhou has registered temperatures of around 40 degrees Celsius since last Tuesday. It’s reached 40.5 degrees Celsius twice in the last 7 days, the highest figure since Hangzhou starting keeping temperature records in 1951.
Although Hangzhou boasts beautiful landscapes, most tourists are not venturing out in the day. Even the taxi drivers have noticed the drop in customers.
Mr. Chen, taxi driver, said, “Of course business is worse. There are fewer people on the street, and fewer tourists in the west lake district.”
But some people don’t have a choice. Since last Sunday, sanitation workers’ afternoon shifts have been changed from 12 midday to half past 3. But even so, it’s still hot, which makes their work more difficult.
The hot weather is forecast to last at least another week. But Hangzhou MET office says, they may have to resort to producing artificial rain to relieve the hot conditions.

Assange said, "This is the first ever espionage conviction against a whistleblower in the United States. It is a dangerous precedent and an example of national security extremism. It is a short-sighted judgement that cannot be tolerated and it must be reversed. It is important that this precedent of charging journalistic sources with espionage not be permitted to stand.
It is a serious precedent, it is a serious abuse and it will mean the end of national security journalism in the United States as we know it if it is left to stand."
