World rings in New Year
世界各地迎接新年到来

KAMUYe^lsRt59q~1F_G

New Zealanders are among the first in the world to usher in the New Year - with a fireworks display at Auckland's landmark Sky Tower that sent bright colors erupting through the night sky over the city's harbor. An estimated one-and-a-half million people lined Australia's Sydney Harbor at the stroke of midnight for a spectacular show involving seven tons of fireworks over the Harbor Bridge and Sydney Opera House. Japanese revelers welcome 2015 by releasing hundreds of balloons in front of Tokyo Tower. Fireworks explode off Taiwan's tallest skyscraper. And North Korea stages a 15 minute long fireworks display in Pyongyang -- watched by thousands-- although no sign of that country's leader. And then there's Bolivia - where folks are flocking to shops and street markets to find the perfect pair of lucky underwear to welcome 2015. In accordance with their annual tradition, Bolivians swap their old underwear for red or yellow undergarments at midnight in the hopes of ushering in a prosperous new year. Red is believed to bear love, while yellow is thought to bring money.

Brandishing sticks, isolated indigenous tribe members gesture and yell as they approach a residential community in Peru's Amazon region.Residents have been evacuated following what was deemed an attack by the Mashco Piro tribe who were demanding food and supplies, authorities say. Guillermo Bardiles videotaped the Monte Salvado Community under attack. (SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) MONTE SALVADO COMMUNITY MEMBER, GUILLERMO BARDALES (WHO SHOT IMAGES OF COMMUNITY AFTER ATTACK), SAYING: "They were already entering the community, pointing arrows. Then I got scared but as we understand them, I told them to not throw arrows at us because they hurt. They understood and put their arrows down and another few entered all over and others were entering from above, they had practically surrounded the village. The only thing to do was to escape." Peru's Vice-Minister of Intercultural Affairs Patricia Balbuena. (SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) PERU'S VICE-MINISTER OF INTERCULTURAL AFFAIRS,PATRICIA BALBUENA, SAYING: "We did not know until that moment, the gravity or number of settlers in isolation that were surrounding the community and indeed how the village was being affected. Those two points, led us to - with the community itself - decide to evacuate." But this isn't the first time an indigenous community has launched such an attack. In May, a tribe was reported to have raided a tourist lodge for metal pots.
