Pakistan bomb kills 13
Thirteen people were killed when a bomb blew up here on the side of a road in Pakistan's city of Quetta. Eleven of the dead were security personnel and two of them were civilians. Another 16 people were wounded, and authorities say the death toll could rise. Police said the bomb contained around 100 kilograms of explosives and was apparently planted in a parked vehicle and remotely detonated.
The wounded were rushed to hospital where relatives and colleagues mourned the loss of their loved ones. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the bomb. However, separatist rebels have for decades been battling to control the region's natural gas and other resources in Pakistan's southwest. It was the second major attack since Pakistan's elections, which marked the first transition between civilian governments in the country's turbulent history.

Masayoshi Matsumoto joined the Japanese army in 1943 and went to China as a medical orderly. One of his tasks was to examine Korean women brought in to work in a military brothel.
91-YEAR-OLD JAPANESE VETERAN MASAYOSHI MATSUMOTO, SAYING: "The comfort women had to go for sexual health checks, you could say it was their job to do it -- just as it was my job to check them. There was no choice in the matter. To refuse would have been a death sentence." Historians estimate that as many as 200,000 so-called comfort women were forced into prostitution by the Japanese Imperial Army during World War Two. Matsumoto who is 91 and a Christian pastor says it is now his mission to speak out about the injustices suffered by Asian women.
91-YEAR-OLD JAPANESE VETERAN MASAYOSHI MATSUMOTO, SAYING: "The Prime Minister should apologise fully and without reservation on behalf of the Japanese nation. And the people that need compensation should be paid. He should beg forgiveness for the things that were done." The comfort women issue has long been a diplomatic thorn between Japan and South Korea Last week the Mayor of Osaka sparked a firestorm of criticism at home and abroad when he said the military brothel system was "necessary" during World War Two.
Garden pests as tasty treats
They're a curse for most gardeners. But a snail invasion on this ornamental plant farm in Colombia gave its owners a new business idea - snail production for overseas culinary markets. Easier said than done - the molluscs are sensitive to even slight changes in their diet or environment. And snail farming isn't popular in Colombia says co-owner, Armando Rey.
Armando Rey, co-owner, Carey Investment, saying (Spanish): "We had to do all the research: how they're raised, how we improve stages, how we change them. It's a passion because one doesn't get a lot of information and we're doing it by experience and not by books, but by the experience that we're developing here." Launched in 2005, the company now produces four tons of meat a month - that's about 200,000 snails. Some of their biggest customers are in Europe where the economic recession has hurt the snail business. But, they are still growing slowly, says co-owner, Mariela Forero.
Mariela Forero, co-owner, Carey Investment, saying (Spanish): "Our product has moved like a snail, slowly getting into position. People order more each time and it has been very satisfying for us to know that in Canada, France, Spain, Japan, China, people have tried them and they've given our product rave reviews." So next time you order escargot, it might come from a farm in Colombia.

President Xi Jinping has personally visited the affected areas and residents during a three-day visit to Southwest China’s Lushan County, which was struck by a 7.0-magnitude earthquake in April. He has urged local governments to carefully evaluate the damage and draft a rehabilitation plan.
After his arrival, President Xi Jinping visited people who were still living in makeshift tents, to inquire about health conditions in the area.
"The CPC Central Committee is very concerned about the lives of quake-survivors. One month has passed, and we came here to visit you. On behalf of the CPC Central Committee and State Council, I express my sincere greetings to you," Chinese President Xi Jinping said.
Xi Jinping said local governments should create preferential rehabilitation policies targeting investment, taxation, land use, employment and social security.
He added that plans should also include the participation of the private sector and local residents.
“I hope we can continue to pull together in times of difficulty and work hard. We should rebuild our safe, beautiful and worry-free homeland on the support of the government and the party and by relying on our own hands,” Xi said.
Schooling in quake-hit zones was one particular concern of the president.
During his tour, he spoke to primary school students in Lushan. “I am very happy seeing you are happy. Don’t let our next generation, our children be hurt by any natural disaster or man-made disaster. Let them to be happy forever. It is our responsibility.”
Xi Jinping has asked students to be strong, brave, united and fraternal.
During an evening meeting, the President stressed that efforts should be made to get schools up and running again and to provide psychological counselling to those in need.
During his trip to the quake zone, President Xi also met officers from the People’s Liberation Army, military pilots, armed police, and paramilitary rescuers, praising them for their rescue and relief efforts.
Many local farmers lost both their homes and crops in the earthquake. During a visit to corn farms, Xi Jinping asked farmers to focus on agricultural production and to make the best use of their land.
