Rescuers continue to pull residents from the rubble following a deadly earthquake that killed nearly 200 people in China's Sichuan province over the weekend. The 6.6. magnitude quake has left residents of Ya'an city desperate for supplies and food after their homes were destroyed. On Tuesday, this local official said there are not enough tents to house all of those who have been displaced. More than 12,000 people were injured due to the tremors. According to state television, emergency workers are targeting nearby remote villages, but have been hampered by damaged and blocked roads. Saturday's quake killed 193 people. Another 25 are still reported as missing.

Experts say a new strain of bird flu that has killed 22 people in China is "one of the most lethal" of its kind. Since it was first detected in March, at least 108 people have been infected by the strain of virus known as H7N9. A team from the World Health Organization (WHO) is monitoring the outbreak. They say the virus appears to be more easily passed to humans than an earlier deadly strain.

WORLD HEALTH ORGANISATION ASSISTANT DIRECTOR-GENERAL FOR HEALTH SECURITY KEIJI FUKUDA SAYING: "There are some other examples of other influenza viruses which are very dangerous for humans. You know, I think the H5N1 bird flu virus is one of the most famous examples of how dangerous an influenza virus can be for people in terms of being lethal. But this is definitely one of the most lethal influenza viruses that we've seen so far." It's not yet determined whether the virus could become transmissible between people. The WHO believes poultry markets are the likely source of infection, as samples from chickens, ducks and pigeons have tested positive.

Business in Taiwan poultry stalls was hit hard on Thursday after a case of the H7N9 bird flu strain was reported here. Taiwan's Health Department said that a 53-year-old businessman had contracted the flu while travelling in China It's the first reported case outside mainland China. The man was hospitalised when he became ill three days after returning from his trip. Authorities said he is in a serious condition. An unidentified vendor in a Taipei market said customers should not worry. But another said business is down.

UNIDENTIFIED VENDOR, SAYING: "Before, perhaps we were able to sell seven to eight chickens, but now, it's about four to five." The Taiwanese government said it would take appropriate measures, including opening a special out-patient clinic for H7N9 cases. As of Tuesday, 108 people had contracted the disease on the Chinese mainland.

A medical postgraduate student from a top university in Shanghai has died of poisoning. His death came after two week’s of intense medical care in hospital. Police say one of his roommates is their top suspect and he is now being questioned.
It could have been another rags to riches story if the tragedy hadn’t have happened.
The victim, 28 year old Huang Yang, was studying at the prestigious Fudan University. He came from a destitute family, where both of his parents had been laid off.
Huaang's father said, "I am over 50 years old now. I am in so much pain. If he can’t live, his mom doesn’t want to live either."
According to the report by the school, Huang was sent to a hospital on April 1st and had been experiencing fever and vomiting.
On Saturday, police detained the suspect, Huang’s roommate, who is surnamed Lin.
This came after another student told police that Lin had been experimenting on mice using a chemical compound that could bring about the same symptoms Huang had.
Then an investigation was launched and police later found toxic compounds in a water dispenser in Huang’s dorm room. An autopsy was performed, but the results have not been released yet.
But the suspect’s motivations are unknown and both Huang’s parents and the school denied rumors that the two students didn’t get along because they were competing for doctoral opportunities.
Fang Ming, deputy director of publicity dep't of Fudan University, said, "It’s up to the police to announce their findings. But these two students belong to two different majors and were interning at different hospitals."
Back at the school, Huang’s death has shocked many of his schoolmates.
Huang's classmate said, "I never could have imagined it could be like this.He was very easygoing and got along with everybody."
On the internet, the tragedy has drawn widespread sympathy for the victim and condemnation for the culprit.
An announcement on Fudan University’s microblog has been reposted more than 160,000 times and drawn over 60,000 comments.
Fang said, "It’s an extreme case both the school and society don’t want to see or bear. I hope our students can rationally look at this and while mourning for him, they can also reflect on this. "
The police are still looking into the suspect’s motivations as many people across the country mourn.

Ultimately, that’s what we’ll remember from this week. That’s what will remain. Stories of heroism and kindness; resolve and resilience; generosity and love.
The brave first responders – police officers, firefighters, EMTs, and National Guard – who ran toward danger to help their fellow citizens.
The race volunteers, spectators, and exhausted runners who rushed to help, including troops and veterans who never expected to see such scenes on the streets of America.
The determined doctors and nurses at some of the world’s best hospitals, who have toiled day and night to save so many lives.
The big-hearted people of Boston – residents, priests, shopkeepers – who carried victims in their arms; delivered water and blankets; lined up to give blood; opened their homes to total strangers.
And the heroic federal agents and police officers who worked together throughout the week, often at great risk to themselves, to keep our communities safe. As a country, we are eternally grateful for the profound sacrifices they make in the line of duty – sometimes making the ultimate sacrifice to defend the people they’ve sworn to protect.
If anyone wants to know who we are; what America is; how we respond to evil and terror – that’s it. Selflessly. Compassionately. And unafraid.
Through days that would test even the sturdiest of souls, Boston’s spirit remains undaunted. America’s spirit remains undimmed. Our faith in each other, our love for this country, our common creed that cuts across whatever superficial differences we may have – that’s what makes us strong. That’s why we endure.
In the days to come, we will remain vigilant as a nation. And I have no doubt the city of Boston and its surrounding communities will continue to respond in the same proud and heroic way that they have thus far – and their fellow Americans will be right there with them every step of the way.
