1【Sandstorms hit northwest China】中国西北地区遭沙尘暴袭击

p1[CrXIY2HCaJan

TEXT:Sand drifts through China's northwest on Friday - making visibility perilous and shrouding cities in thick orange dust. Many residents still braved the choking sandstorms - venturing out with facemasks and hooded tops as they faced the elements. The strong winds carrying dust and sand, accompanied by a sharp drop in temperature, swept across most of Gansu. Temperatures in the province's capital plummeted to four degrees Celsius while the strong winds prompted a gale warning in a neighbouring province. The sand has so far not affected flights or traffic in the area.

TEXT:For several hours every day, 13 year old Chit Ko walks barefoot with a basket full of rocks on his shoulder. He earns $3.50 a day transporting stones back and forth for a construction company who will use them to build roads and highways. It's back breaking work, but Chit, who quit school so he could work to support his family, has other plans. "I want to be a doctor when I'm older," he says. "I want to take care of my parents." Chit is one of many child labourers being exploited in Myanmar... a country whose recent foray onto the international stage has it scurrying to play catch up when it comes to infrastructure and economic growth. The International Labour Organisation says the lure of cheap labour is a slippery slope when the government has so many priorities that need to be addressed.INTERNATIONAL LABOUR ORGANIZATION LIAISON OFFICER STEVE MARSHALL SAYING: "They have to address economic policy, child education, health, development, agriculture, all of these policies together, because each of them work in different areas to achieve that end objective, and it's a massive problem." According to rights groups, only about 60 percent of Myanmar's children are enrolled in school.... and of those, about a third drop out after fifth grade.

Nevada has had two weeks of early voting starting on October 20 and ending November 2. Nevada resident Loran Gibson says it was convenient. "I know friends that, if they didn't have early voting, they wouldn't be able to vote because they're working," said Gibson.For weeks, campaigns have been getting out the vote around the country, aiming to persuade voters that the candidates embrace their concerns. Here in Nevada, the key issues vary from person to person. The big issue for most voters is jobs. Nevada has the highest unemployment rate in the country, caused by downturns in tourism and construction.

v*HgZ~gz%;B3eW

The Obama administration points to job growth announced Friday, while the Romney campaign points to continuing high rates of unemployment, both here in Nevada and around the country.

s9~~0YlZ]XHqDup3~;

Each campaign views the issue from its own perspective, says economist Jeffrey Waddoups of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Waddoups notes that President Obama enjoys an edge in voter surveys, but says there is no clear frontrunner in Nevada.

LLBWnfc3yTH_3

"It's not really a stalemate, but it's a battleground state and it's going to be really close," added Waddoups.

In much of the country, the contest began long before Election Day, but the votes will not be counted until after the polls close.
