Wildfire near Yosemite threatens power in San Francisco
A vast California wildfire sweeps further into Yosemite National park, a major tourist destination in the U.S. The blaze exploded in size overnight and resisted efforts to control it, despite thousands of fire-fighters battling the flames. The park has the electrical infrastructure serving the city and powerlines in San Francisco have been forced to shut down. The California governor has declared a state of emergency. It's one of the fastest moving of 50 large wildfires raging across the parched west of the U.S., blackening around 11,000 acres..... forcing holiday-makers to flee the area during peak season and placing thousands of homes under threat.
Japan's nuclear authority inspects Fukushima leak
Officials from Japan's nuclear authority inspect the giant storage tanks at the Fukushima plant. They say 300 tonnes of radiactive water has leaked from one of these tanks into the ground. Around a million tonnes of water has been stored in 350 tanks to cool the melted reactor cores after the plant was crippled by the earthquake and tsunami in 2011. The water is extremely toxic. Inspectors here say Tokyo Electric Power company -- the operator of the plant -- was careless in monitoring the tanks. They criticised TEPCO for failing to keep records of inspections, missing the problems. Since one of the tanks started leaking, radioactive water has been pumped into storage pits above ground. So far enough water to fill more than 130 Olympic swimming pools has been moved and the plant is quickly running out of space. As the sheer scale of the problem becomes apparent, fears of fresh leaks are rising. Some experts say to contain the most toxic waste, less contaminated water will have to be dumped into the sea.
Egypt reopens border with Gaza Strip
Waiting to cross into Egypt, hundreds of Palestinians queue at the Rafah border post. The crossing is the main window to the outside world for the Gaza Strip's 1.7 million residents. Egyptian authorities re-opened the border after a four day closure that left thousands of Palestinians, including students and patients seeking medical treatment, unable to travel. This Palestinian says that if he is not allowed into Egypt soon he will have to delay his studies at university, costing him extra in fees. Hamas, an off-shoot of the Muslim Brotherhood, has ruled Gaza since 2007 and has an uneasy relationship with Egypt's new army-backed leadership which deposed President Mohamed Mursi on July 3rd. Egyptian officials have accused Hamas of aiding militants in the Sinai and say poor security conditions are to blame for often long delays at the Rafah crossing.

US:New home sales fall dramatically in July
US fixed mortgage rates have jumped to the highest level in the past two years this week, causing the falling of new home sales. It has added uncertainties about when the US Federal Reserve will scale back its monetary stimulus.
All that Fed taper talk is finally hitting home.
New home sales- which reflect contracts signed after rates spiked- down dramatically in July.
Recent data had shown the housing recovery humming along but the consequences of those higher rates are starting to show.
For example- even though final sale prices on houses are still rising- there are signs home sellers are nervous.
Kolko says Trulia’s data shows consumers are nervous about mortgage rates.
And the reality is they are spending less- retailers’ earnings have been dismal-and consumer confidence is down.
And consumers that can’t buy- or sell houses- are less able to move- for example- to take a new job.
All reasons a hobbled home market is very scary.
And at the Jackson Hole conference in Wyoming, Fed officials have been warned about the consequences of tightening too soon.
The opening paper says that the Fed must maintain an ultra-easy policy to keep the recovery on track.

South Korea's Arirang-5 satellite has been launched atop a Russian Dnepr rocket.
The launch took place at 8:39 pm,Thursday local time from Russia’s Dombarovsky launch site. Arirang-5 has successfully entered orbit and communicated with the control center on the ground.
The satellite is expected to circle the earth 15 times a day in a sun synchronous orbit with an average altitude of 550 kilometers, regardless of weather conditions. It has a mission lifespan of five years.
Arirang-5 is a radar imaging satellite, the first to be developed and operated by South Korea. The satellite has cost $212 million US dollars since 2005 to build.
The satellite will be South Korea’s fourth multi-purpose satellite, but the first with synthetic aperture radar that will provide images of 1-meter resolution.
