2【Passengers killed in India train blaze】
TEXT:The site of a deadly train fire in southern India. One coach of the overnight Tamil Nadu Express from Delhi to Chennai went up in flames in the early hours of Monday morning when passing through Nellore station. At least 30 people were reported killed and dozens were severely injured -- though authorities feared the death toll could rise. Local officials said 72 passengers were travelling in the affected coach. Local media reported that the fire was caused by an electrical short circuit, and that most of the passengers were asleep at the time of disaster. Travis Brecher, Reuters

3【Camera system brings new focus to ball sports】
TEXT:Table tennis is one of the world's fastest ball sports. Competition players regularly hit the ball at speeds too fast for broadcast camera operators to follow...until now. Tokyo University's Auto Pan-Tilt camera system is designed to keep the ball in the centre of the frame throughout the entire game. Recording sequences at 1000 frames per second, it can then play them back in slow motion, providing a new perspective for viewers. SOUNDBITE: UNIVERSITY OF TOKYO ASSISTANT PROFESSOR AND DOCTOR OF ENGINEERING HIROMASA OKU SAYING: "This machine is for movements where it's actually close to impossible for human beings to follow. The system automatically tracks and follows objects in cases where it would be hard for a human to do so." Doctor of engineering Hiromasa Oku helped design the system. It consists of a stationary camera and two mirrors attached to adjustable high-speed motors placed in the camera's line of sight. But rather than tracking the object itself, the mirrors follows its colour, pre-programmed into a computer, against a contrasting background. UNIVERSITY OF TOKYO ASSISTANT PROFESSOR AND DOCTOR OF ENGINEERING HIROMASA OKU SAYING: "In general, as long as there is some sort of difference in color, then it can be tracked. So we can track something like a yellow tennis ball, and in the future we hope to be able to track soccer balls and the like as well." Oku also sees potential for the camera in nature photography...filming birds and insects in flight for example, or anything, he says that moves faster than the naked eye can follow.
TEXT:This amateur video purports to show Syrian rebels attacking a government checkpoint in Aleppo. It was one of several clashes reported across the country's biggest city, which has become a battleground between insurgents and troops loyal to president Bashar al-Assad. This footage, posted to a social media website, shows residents fleeing their homes ahead of what experts worry will be a bloody confrontation. Reuters could not independently verify the content of this video. Many fleeing the Syrian conflict may end up here - a refugee camp just across the Syrian border in Jordan. It was officially inaugurated over the weekend by Jordan's foreign minister who called the fighting a "tragedy". United Nations officials said the country is bracing for an influx of refugees. UNHCR REPRESENTATIVE TO JORDAN, ANDREW HARPER, SAYING: "We can only expect that more people will be coming across, more people who will be in need of assistance. We are seeing women and children without their husbands, without their fathers coming across the border." More than 140,000 Syrians have fled to Jordan since fighting began 16 months ago. 【Drought Taking Toll on Midwest Corn Producers】
TEXT:One of those farmers, Alan Bowers Junior, can see and hear the profits from his corn disintegrating. The corn stalks on his field near Du Bois Illinois are so dry and brittle, they break up just by touching them. None of the stalks are producing usable corn.
Because of the drought, thousands of hectares of his farm are in similar shape.
"It's very devastating," said Bowers. "You drive past it every day. It's out your back door. You get up in the morning, and you think it might be another 13 months before we get a paycheck. The corn and soybean crop is our paycheck."
In mid-July, Bowers made a heart-wrenching decision. Faced with a near total loss of his corn crop, he decided to cut it down.
"We are making what they call corn silage out of this for the animals, for the cows, and if you wait until it's completely dried up it won't even make suitable feed for the animals," Bowers explained. "So we have to do it in a timely fashion before the hot temperatures and winds dry it out even more and turns it completely into you might say dust."
Dust is the consistency of much of Bowers' farmland, exposed to the wind now that the stalks are cut down. Some of the only stalks left standing are for crop insurance adjusters to inspect.
Alan Bowers and his wife Lori are hoping for a modest insurance settlement just so that they can make ends meet until next year.
"We have no boss, and nobody to help us, and it's tough, you have to work together you have to work with a husband a wife and family and together try to work through it," Lori Bowers explained.
The remaining land on the Bowers farm is filled with soybeans, and unless a significant amount of rain falls in the next several weeks, the outlook for production is just as grim.
Lori's husband Alan says if next year is anything like the present, he isn't sure the farm that has been in his family for four generations can survive.
"It will be five times as challenging as what it is this year," Alan Bowers noted.
Bowers adds that the only way to prevent losing his farm is to have more of what he and his wife have been praying for this year, rain.

【Debating the Best Way to Learn a Language】
This is the VOA Special English Education Report.
What is the best way to learn a new language? A small study of foreign language learning in adults compared two methods. One is known as the explicit or classroom method. This is the kind of traditional classroom teaching where students are taught a lot of information about grammar rules.
The other method is known as the implicit or immersion method. The idea here is to learn much the way children do when they learn a native language. That is, by being with native speakers and absorbing the language that surrounds them, generally without a lot of explanation.
Teachers may combine these two methods into what Professor Michael Ullman calls immersion-style classroom teaching. But is that necessarily a better way to learn a language?
Mr. Ullman was thesenior investigator for the new study. He is a professor of neuroscience at Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington. He says he was surprised to find that combining the two methods might not help the brain in processing the new language.
MICHAEL ULLMAN: "You know, if my life were on the line, and I had to learn a language, what would I do? I'm not sure. One possibility would be that, to start with explicit and then go to immersion, right? Start with classroom and then go to immersion. But there is this possibility that classroom could hurt later immersion. That's what, you know, one possibility of interpreting our data."
The Public Library of Science published the study earlier this year. The twenty-one adults in the experiment learned Brocanto2, a thirteen-word language created for the study. The words and grammar rules relate to a computer game similar to chess that the learners played. For example, "Blom neimo lu neep li praz" means "The square blom-piece switches with the neep-piece."
The researchers tested the people three to six months after they had learned the language, to see how well they could remember it. The study found that those who had learned it with the immersion method had brain waves similar to those of native speakers of a language when speaking that language.
Professor Ullman says those who trained with the classroom method also became more native-like in their brain processing. But only the immersion group showed full native-like processing of the grammar. Still, he says teachers should be careful how they use the results of his study.
MICHAEL ULLMAN: "You know I would not make any curriculum changes based on this. Nevertheless, it is suggestive, and I think it warrants further research to see whether in fact what kind of training might in fact be best not just for reaching the native brain bases but also for, you know, maximum proficiency in different aspects of language, like grammar, you know, syntax and lexicon. So I think further research is warranted. And it may be, for example, that a combination of classroom and immersion might be best. But we don't know that."
