Russian President Vladimir Putin softened his stance on Crimea on Tuesday. He said military force in the eastern region of neighboring Ukraine is not his first option.

World stocks fall on Ukraine unrest

The crisis in Ukraine sent global stocks lower on Monday, investors flocked to commodities - driving up prices for oil, gold and wheat. All three major US stock indexes posted their biggest one-day decline in a month.

The S&P 500 index fell 0.7 percent, the Dow dropped 0.9 percent, and the Nasdaq fell 0.7 percent. European markets fell even more. Germany’s DAX sank 3.4 percent and Russia’s benchmark stock index plunged 12 percent.

Asian stock markets were hit as well. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index closed 1.5 percent lower and Tokyo’s Nikkei dropped 1.3 percent. On the other hand, fears of supply disruption drove up the price of crude, which climbed 2.33 dollars on Monday, hitting its highest so far this year.
