When the time came for them to set out, the fairy went into her bed-chamber, and took a little knife,and cut off a lock of her hair,

当她们即将出发的时候，仙女走进她的卧室，拿出一把小刀，剪下了她的一绺头发，

and gave it to the princess, and said, 'Take care of it, dear child;

将它交给公主，说道：“亲爱的孩子，好好保管，

for it is a charm that may be of use to you on the road.'

它会作为你的护身符保佑你一路平安的。”

Then they all took a sorrowful leave of the princess; and she put the lock of hair into her bosom, got upon her horse,

她们伤心地互相道别后，公主把手帕揣进了怀里，骑上马，

and set off on her journey to her bridegroom's kingdom.

踏上前往新郎王国的旅程。

One day, as they were riding along by a brook, the princess began to feel very thirsty: and she said to her maid,

上路走了一段时间后，公主觉得渴了，对侍女说：

'Pray get down, and fetch me some water in my golden cup out of yonder brook, for I want to drink.'

“请下去到那条小溪边，用我的金杯舀点水来，我想喝水。”

'Nay,' said the maid, 'if you are thirsty, get off yourself, and stoop down by the water and drink;

“不，”侍女说，“要是你渴了，你自己下去趴在水边喝就是了

I shall not be your waiting-maid any longer.'

我不想再做你的侍女了。”

Then she was so thirsty that she got down, and knelt over the little brook, and drank;

公主渴得难受，只得下马来到小溪边跪着喝水

for she was frightened, and dared not bring out her golden cup; and she wept and said,

也不能拿出自己的金杯来用。她哭泣着说道：

'Alas! what will become of me?' And the lock answered her, and said:

“唉!我将会怎么样呢?”她怀里的头发回答她，说道:

'Alas! alas! if thy mother knew it,Sadly, sadly, would she rue it.'

“唉!唉!如果你母亲知道这件事， 她的心会碎成两半。”
