报道中的pyramid scheme即我们通常说的"传销"，或叫pyramid selling。
我们知道pyramid是金字塔的意思，顾名思义，传销就是一种由上而下的运作模式，即用尖顶来比喻上线，基于上线，逐上而下次第发展许多下线的销售模式。新会员通常都要先缴纳一定的membership fee(会员费)，怀着获得windfall(意外横财)的期望，说服更多的人加入进来，这些人都是他的下家。在我国，传销于1998就被禁止，并被视为synonymous with cheating and fraud(欺诈的同义词)。

与pyramid scheme相类似的有一个词叫Ponzi scheme，即庞氏骗局。20世纪初，一个叫庞齐的美国商人许诺投资者以利润回报，把新投资者的钱作为快速盈利付给最初投资的人，以诱使更多的人上当，7个月居然吸引了3万名投资者，一年后这场骗局才被揭穿，史称Ponzi scheme(庞氏骗局)，在中国就是"空手套白狼"。
