Task 1
What is the best way to learn about a city: Taking an organized tour, visiting museums, or walking around the city?
I think the best way to learn about a city is by taking an organized tour because organized tours often take tourists to the most famous and important parts of the city, so you can easily get the basic experience and knowledge you need. For example, when I toured around Washington DC, I went with a traveling group. Our tour guide showed us around the National Mall, Georgetown University and American University, the Dupont Circle and so on. He also told us a lot about the history of each place. I would’ve been a lot of research on my part if I wanted to learn all that, so going with an experienced tour guide made it a lot easier.
Task 2
Do you prefer a busy schedule or a schedule with a lot of free time?
I definitely prefer a light schedule with a lot of free time. I believe in work-life balance. Apart from time spent at work, I need to have my free time to do what I like such as learning new skills, reading, playing sports, playing music and so on. For example, I’m now learning Spanish every week night. If I had a busy schedule and often had to work late, that would be impossible. Also, I have had really hectic working schedules in the past when I had to work 100 hours. I always felt so exhausted after work and ended up doing nothing other than working at the office. It was a dark time. I don’t want to be a slave to my schedule and would rather plan my own life.
Task 3
A student proposed that the school should provide scholarships to chemistry students with certificates. The man in the conversation disagrees with it. First, having a certificate already makes the student’s resume look nice, which is already a benefit to them. The students have already tried their best at school, so there’s nothing more to motivate them. Second, the school could use the money to do other more important things, like upgrading the old equipment in the science lab. It would benefit all the students instead of just top students.
Task 4
The professor gives an example to illustrate role-playing. In the example, his friend sells cars. He hired a lot of employees and trained them to be good salespeople. In order for the new employees to understand how it worked and be good at it, he had this training technique in which some of them played salespeople and some played potential customers. They would rehearse a scene where a customer wanted to buy a car and the salesperson tried to see him/her a car. This gave them experience before they started to do real work.
Task 5
The man in the conversation has a problem that he has an appointment at the dentist, but at the same time he also has a study group for his French class. The first solution is to go to the group study session, but the dentist is so busy that it’d be hard for him to set up an appointment. The second solution is to go to the appointment and skip the group study, but he has a test coming up and should get more studying done.
Task 6
Ants usually build nests underground in a dry environment. There are two ways that ants keep their nests moist. The first is to bring water drops to the nests. The second is to put bird feathers outside their nests to collect water at night, and then move the feather to the nests in the morning.
