When day began to dawn again, he watched for the sun; and when its cheerful light began to sparkle in the room, he pictured to himself—pictured! he saw—the high church towers rising up into the morning sky, the town reviving, waking, starting into life once more, the river glistening as it rolled (but rolling fast as ever), and the country bright with dew.
Familiar sounds and cries came by degrees into the street below; the servants in the house were roused and busy; faces looked in at the door, and voices asked his attendants softly how he was. Paul always answered for himself, 'I am better. I am a great deal better, thank you! Tell Papa so!'
By little and little, he got tired of the bustle of the day, the noise of carriages and carts, and people passing and repassing; and would fall asleep, or be troubled with a restless and uneasy sense again—the child could hardly tell whether this were in his sleeping or his waking moments—of that rushing river. 'Why, will it never stop, Floy?' he would sometimes ask her. 'It is bearing me away, I think!'
But Floy could always soothe and reassure him; and it was his daily delight to make her lay her head down on his pillow, and take some rest.
'You are always watching me, Floy, let me watch you, now!' They would prop him up with cushions in a corner of his bed, and there he would recline the while she lay beside him: bending forward oftentimes to kiss her, and whispering to those who were near that she was tired, and how she had sat up so many nights beside him.
Thus, the flush of the day, in its heat and light, would gradually decline; and again the golden water would be dancing on the wall.
He will soon begin to write a novel.
He will soon begin writing a novel.
She began to like novels at twenty.
I shall begin this book today.
I shall begin with this book today.
begin后一般不加from,且绝对不能接from ... to ...。
The journey begins from Shanghai.
The journey begins from Shanghai to Beijing.
这句是完全错误的。习惯上begin at the beginning和begin from the beginning表达都很普遍,均指“从头开始”;
The book began to be read (by him) last Sunday.
The book was begun (by him) to be read last Sunday.
It rained at five o'clock.
It began to rain at three o'clock.
I felt I did not begin to understand him.
Your suggestion does not begin to meet the difficulty.
Nothing has begun to interest her so much as folk music.
begin和commence意思相似,但前者的使用比后者普遍,尤其是口语中。通常正式文字中,会使用commence,如commence hostilities(开始交战)和Hostilities commenced late that year。commence后多接动名词,较少接不定式,且多用在有意志的事上;
I began/started teaching when I was 24.
We will begin the meeting with a message from the President.
It's starting to rain.
不过在某些时候,人们习惯用start,如表示‘start a journey’(开始旅程)和‘start working’(开始工作)中,不用begin;
The show begins next week.
The meeting had begun for five minutes when he arrived there.
The meeting had on for five minutes when he arrived there.
begin, start, commence, initiate, inaugurate
She's begun on (ie started writing or reading) a new novel.
Building began last year.
二.Thus:adv.
accordingly, consequently, hence, so, therefore, thus
It was already rather late, thus we decide to urge the customer.
It ill behoves Anne (ie She ought not) to speak thus of her benefactor.
