For the past few centuries, relations between the United Kingdom and Argentina have been pretty shaky. The heart of their dispute lies in a tiny archipelago, some 300 miles from the coast of Argentina, called the Falkland Islands. Their struggle stems from the question of who actually owns the islands. So what’s the whole story? Why do the UK and Argentina hate each other?
Well, the history is a little complicated. But simply put, the first person to actually claim the Islands was an English sailor named John Strong in 1690. While both Spain and France made various claims on the Islands, the British ultimately maintained their jurisdiction. Argentina didn’t become a part of the equation until 1820 when an American mercenary landed on the Falkland Islands and declared them for what is now Argentina. About 9 years later,Argentina gave the islands away as payment for a debt, a move that prompted the UK to send a ship in 1833 to reestablish the British flag. It was met with little resistance, as the Argentine commander was heavily outnumbered.
For nearly the next 150 years, the British controlled the Islands while Argentina continued to dispute their sovereignty. After increasing tensions between the two countries, as well as an economic collapse and military regime change in Argentina, the Argentine military invaded the Falkland Islands in 1982. They assumed the British would not respond with force. They were wrong. Within weeks, the British mounted an assault to retake the Islands, while most of the European Community backed the UK and imposed sanctions on Argentina.
After three months of intense fighting, the British reconquered the Falkland Islands, and expelled all Argentine forces from the area.
In the years following, the British ramped up their military presence on the islands, granted all residents full British Citizenship, and gave the Islands full self-governance as a British dependency. But in 2006, Argentina began claiming sovereignty again in an attempt to secure fishing and petroleum rights. In 2009, Argentina made a territory claim to the UN concerning an area including the Falklands, which the UK denied as being legitimate. The following year, in 2010, Argentina demanded that any ships that wanted to go to the Falkland Islands would have to seek a permit from the Argentine government. Both the British and Falklands government ignored this demand.
Finally, in 2013, Falkland Islanders voted in a referendum on whether the territory would stay British. With nearly every single Island resident voting to remain a British territory,it would seem that the question of sovereignty was solved. But in response, the Argentine government said that the referendum had quote “no value”, since the population of the Islands was “implanted” by the British.
Despite some pretty good reasons as to why the UK should hold dominion over the Islands,Argentina has argued that because the islands are closer to them than to Britain, Argentina should have control over them. This argument has widely been called ridiculous.

Heavy snowstorm batters northern, eastern China
China's weather authority has issued warnings Tuesday morning for a strong cold wave and heavy blizzards, saying heavy snowfall would affect provinces such as Henan, Anhui, Shandong and Hebei in northern and eastern China. In some mountainous areas, snow was estimated to be over 4 inches deep.
Meanwhile, in dramatic contrast, southern China's Guangdong province has seen sweltering temperatures of over 20 degrees Celsius on average this month, breaking its historical record. In some areas, the temperature has even topped 30 degrees, reaching the same levels as in summer time. Jiang Shaoyi has more.
Freezing but stunning. Thousands are attracted as the first snow of this year blanketed the Chinese capital this week. However, this beautiful white snow is not as innocent as it appears.
Drone footage captured this scene in central China's Henan province, as traffic jams lined up for miles and pedestrians struggled due to the snowstorm.
Buses stranded, roads disappeared and traffic turned treacherous. In Hebei, traffic authorities have closed a number of expressways to Beijing. Ships from Shangdong to Liaoning have been suspended since Monday.
To ensure safe traffic on major roads in cities, sprinklers loaded with over 1,800 tons of snow-dissolving agents have been sent out. As people in the north are finding shelter from the snow, people in south are hiding from the scorching sun.
"It's hot, so hot. Just like in summer time. It's kinda ridiculous to me."
"It feel like I'm in summer. Sometimes I can't even fall asleep at night because of the heat. I have to turn on the air conditioner," a Guangdong citizen said.
Experts say El Nino - irregular changes to the world climate caused by surface variations in the Pacific Ocean - has contributed to this extreme weather.
And it is still becoming stronger.
"This El Nino pattern will reach its peak from November to December, and it will last until the spring next year. Under its effect, this year's rain season was the latest to arrive in 37 years. And Guangdong's average temperature this year marks the highest since 1953," said Wu Hongyu of Guangdong Climate Center.
Wu also said El Nino has raised the occurrence of extreme weather. The weather authority also warned people to prevent secondary disasters from this extreme weather, such as floods and landslides.

A suspected suicide belt with a similar "configuration" to those used in the Paris attacks was found Monday just south of the French capital.
Sources close to the investigation said the object was found in a dustbin in the suburb of Montrouge, adding that the device lacked a detonator. Telephone data places Belgian-born Salah Abdeslam, a key suspect in the attacks who is believed still on the run, in the same area on the night of the attacks.
The belt was found by dustmen 10 days after the attacks in the capital that left 130 people dead. It is now being analysed "to confirm whether it is explosive".
