Tonight we are learning just how early in life the problem of high blood pressure can develop. 67 million American adults have it and we learn more today about how the problem is starting with our kids, taking in weight too much salt and results are predictably bad. Our report tonight from our chief science correspondent Robert Bazell.

Petercom insists on the healthy diet for her kids because of her family's history of heart disease and stroke. The effort includes limiting salt.

But too few families are making this effort. The Centers for Disease Control surveyed more than 6200 kids aged 8 to 18. Though the recommended daily sodium intake for the children and adults is 2300 mg a day, kids are getting an average of more than 3300.

For the first time it’s been demonstrated that kids in the US are consuming more salt than anyone ever thought they did. And that high salt intake is associated with high blood pressure even in children.

Blood pressure in kids went up from 1.3 to 2.4 times normal, depending on salt intake. In kids already overweight or obese, blood pressure went up as much as 5 times. If you don't exercise, you are overweight, you don't eat well, you consume pre-package foods, all of those things tend to go to together.

The European Union is set to extend its economic sanctions against Russia for another six months next week. But Greece has been critical of the sanctions, and in the meantime, has just signed a multi-billion dollar deal with Russia.
Relations between Russia and Greece received a major boost this week, with two countries signing a 2.3 billion dollar memorandum on cooperation to build and operate a gas pipeline to deliver Russian gas to Greece.
Kremlin officials have so far denied that Russia is willing to provide financial aid to Athens, however, Greece is certainly set to benefit from the pipeline deal - Russia will cover the costs of it and the understanding is that Greece will pay its pipeline debts later.
Russia is also likely to sell its gas to Greece at a discounted price. The pipeline is part of the Turkish Stream project, which would allow Russia to deliver its gas to Europe bypassing Ukraine.
Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has been critical of the sanctions imposed on Russia over its role in Ukraine, which have triggered a Russian food embargo on EU and US food products.
Under European Union rules, all 28 member nations will have to approve the extension of sanctions against Russia next week for another six months - or until the Minsk cease-fire deal for Ukraine is fully implemented.

Wednesday is the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought. For China it's an ongoing fight, but one where there's some light at the end of tunnel. In some areas, efforts have managed to reverse the effects of desertification, and brought the land back to life.
Sandstorms were a familiar sight in Kangbao County, 260 kilometers north of Beijing. They would even blow into the capital.
Dong Shengcai is the former chief of the county's Forestry Bureau. A veteran in the fight against sand, he remembers well just how serious the storms were.
"Farmers came up with little rhymes that said households must turn on the light, or when sandstorms rolled in it would be pitch black inside," Dong said.
In 2000, China launched a project to stem sandstorms at the source in Beijing and Tianjin. And the solution was to plant trees.
Species with strong resistance to the cold and drought were chosen to adapt to the high altitude and dry lands. One of these was the Caragana korshinskii.
"It has high drought tolerance and well-developed roots. The root of the Caragana can reach two meters deep in the ground and absorb underground water," Dong said.
It took over a decade of efforts. Now the once sandy lands are covered with green. But there's still an insatiable need for more.
In this Beijing-Tianjin project, the state subsidizes 400 yuan for every Mu, or about 670 square meters of forest. But that's not enough.
And there's also loose implementation of environment protection laws in some regions, where economic development is the only thing that's prioritised, and land is excessively exploitated. But still, by and large, the nation is reclaiming its lost land.
"China is seeing an annual reduction of 1,700 square kilometers of desert land, while there are 50 to 70 thousand square kilometers added to the world," said Hu Peixing, from State Forestry Administration.
Other ecological projects undertaken include establishing green belts and returning farmland to forest.. locking up the sand with the power of greenery.
