"On the issue of comfort women, I am deeply pained to think about the comfort women who experienced immeasurable pain and suffering as a result of victimisation due to human trafficking. This is a feeling that I share equally with my predecessors. The Abe government upholds the Kono statement and has no intention to revise it. Based on this position, Japan has made various efforts to provide realistic relief for the comfort women," Abe said.

Saturday's earthquake also affected the Tibet Autonomous Region in Southwest China. As of 9 a.m. on Wednesday, the death toll there stood at 25, with nearly 400 injured.
Two hundred and fifty tons of supplies has arrived in the worst-hit areas. The only road to the devastated town of Zham -- located just 40 kilometres from the earthquake's epicenter, has finally been reopened after three days of repair work. Relocation of the 42-hundred homeless people in the town is expected to be completed by Wednesday night. Telecommunications have now been restored in all areas of the region.
Rescue and repair work should intensify in the coming days, as the weather is expected to pick up from Thursday.
