In the last communication received by air traffic controllers, a pilot on the plane says "Mayday, Mayday engine flameout", a term commonly used to describe engine failure after an interruption to the fuel supply. While they remove the debris, officials say they still hold out hope that at least some of those unaccounted for might still be found alive.

Investigators at the scene of a lethal train accident in White Plains are still trying to sort out what happened. Authorities are calling it one of the worst rail crashes in decades in the area. During Tuesday's rush hour just north of New York City -- the Metro-North train hit a car at a railroad crossing. The driver of the car and five train passengers were all killed. There is still no word on why the car was stopped. Authorities say hundreds of feet of electrified rail skewered the first two carriages of the train. Many of the injured were taken to Westchester Medical Center University Hospital where Dr. Ivan Miller says they treated a wide array of injuries.

Kelley Blue Book senior director of insights Karl Brauer said, "They're selilng trucks. They're selling SUVs. And they're controlling their incentive spending. You're left with profitability." Operating profit shot up in North America and in its international operations, where GM gobbled up more market share in China. But losses widened in Europe. GM lost share in Russia, where it has been cutting production after being hit hard by the falling rouble. It has dropped the Chevy brand in Europe after it failed to make inroads there. After a turbulent first year as CEO, Mary Barra aims to restore Europe to profitability in 2016. GM is sharing some of the wealth. It plans to hike its dividend by 20 percent once it resolves its legal issues over the recall. And it will hand out annual bonus checks of up to $9,000 to its 48,000 union workers. GM's shares, which inched up just 3 percent last year, rose sharply in early trading.

Global oil prices slid Wednesday following a three-day rally with the main US contract sinking more than 4 dollars. US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for delivery in March tumbled 4.60 dollars, or 8.7 percent from Tuesday's close, to 48.45 dollars a barrel.
In London trade, Brent North Sea crude for March shed 3.75 dollars at 54.16 dollars. The drop wiped out much of the gains of the three-day rally, but crude remained well above its lows for the year.
According to US government data, US oil stockpiles mounted again last week, hitting 30-year highs. The market is well-supplied and there had been little concrete in the supply-demand equation to underpin the rise.
