Thousands of supporters flocked to a hospital in Bangkok Friday to wish King Bhumibol Adulydej a happy 87th birthday. Plans for a public appearance were cancelled on the advice of his doctors who said the King was not ready for public appearances. He underwent surgery to remove his gallbladder in October. Many hold the King in god-like reverence and said their spirits wouldn't be dampened whether he appeared in public or not.
(SOUNDBITE) (Thai) 37-YEAR OLD THEPWITOON CHIM-NGOG, SAYING: "It doesn't matter whether he is appearing in front of a public audience or not.I'm just happy that I am here to show my loyalty to him. I'm happy no matter where he is."
The cancelled appearance has fuelled mounting concerns over the King's health and comes during a sensitive time for the country which only six months ago was overthrown in a military coup. King Bhumibol's last public appearance was in November.

Protests against police spread across U.S.
Protests heat up for a second night in cities across the U.S. over a grand jury decision not to indict a New York City police officer for the choking death of unarmed black man, Eric Garner. In New York, demonstrators converged in Times Square by the thousands... and blocked intersections at a number of other locations around Manhattan. Even as they were being loaded onto police vans demonstrators chanted the common rally cry "I can't breathe"... From New York to Chicago to Seattle demonstrators took to the streets.... sometimes disrupting traffic by blocking major highways. Othertimes, laying down in the middle of the street. The demonstrations are in protest of Wednesday's decision not to bring charges against white police officer Daniel Pantaleo. Last July, Pantaleo was attempting to arrest Eric Garner for allegedly selling cigarettes illegally on the streets of Staten Island. Pantaleo was trying to restrain Garner by putting his arm around his neck, but ending up choking him to death. During the incident witnesses said they heard Garner scream "I can't breathe". Thrusday's protests echo outrage sparked nine days when a different grand jury decided not to indict the white police officer who fatally shot a black teenager in Ferguson Missouri.

Belgium seeks cultural prize for famous fries
Some call them chips...others call them fries but in Belgium, no matter what you call them, people say they're a cut above the rest.(SOUNDBITE) (French) PARISIAN TOURIST, NICOLAS PERRIN, SAYING: "The fries are crunchy but on the inside they're meltingly soft, they're really different from what we're used to." In fact, Belgium is so proud of their potato fries, traditionally sold in a paper cone, usually out of some 5,000 shacks or trailers around the country, that they're now cooking up a plan to get them recognized as a global cultural heritage - on par with Turkish coffee and the Argentinean tango. The Belgian delicacy even has its own association, led by Bernard Lefevre.
(SOUNDBITE) (French) NATIONAL PRESIDENT OF THE BELGIAN UNION OF FRITKOT OWNERS UNAFRI, BERNARD LEFEVRE, SAYING: "It's the cone of fries but it's also this culture which surrounds it. It's a good product, but it's a way of living, a 'Belgitude'. Perhaps a little chaotic for foreigners when they come to Belgium for the first time but something we have in common, German-speakers, French-speakers, Dutch-speakers."
So as part of 'National Fries Week', Belgians have been urged to sign petitions calling for the potato chips to become recognized by the United Nation's cultural arm UNESCO (SOUNDBITE) (French) NATIONAL PRESIDENT OF THE BELGIAN UNION OF FRITKOT OWNERS UNAFRI, BERNARD LEFEVRE, SAYING: "For something very simple, I think it is equally important to have pride, to keep this to pass it on to future generations."
Supporters don't think they've bitten off more than they can chew since for this designation to happen, the fries need to be endorsed by a minister of culture and Belgium has three of them.

Russia faces multiple pressures due to Crude prices and western sanctions
Russia faces multiple pressures,Crude prices and western sanctions affect Russian growth. Russia’s finance ministry says for every dollar drop in world crude oil prices, the country will lose 70 billion roubles, or 130 million US dollars.
Crude prices have fallen by a quarter since this summer, and the Russian government had to depreciate the rouble by 40 percent against the dollar since the beginning of the year to keep the same profit margin in its oil exports.
And in October the United States and Europe decided to place economic sanctions on Russia. Under the measures, many Russian companies in energy and national defense are not able to receive loans longer than 30 days from European and American banks and are therefore struggling with capital.
