They were spectators at a volleyball match in the Afghan province of Paktika. Now they're among the survivors of a suicide attack at the match that killed at least 45 people. Officials say at least 50 more were wounded in the explosion which was set-off amid the densely-packed crowd.

The Taliban and other jihadist militants have launched waves of suicide attacks in Afghanistan this year as foreign forces pull out. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the latest bombing in Paktika province where 89 people died in blast at a busy market in July.

Italian Coast Guard video shows the latest rescues of migrants trying to reach its shores. In a single 48-hour period officials say more than 600 were saved from the waters of the Sicilian Channel. There were more rescues in Libyan waters as endangered migrants called for help on satellite phones. They were transferred to Coast Guard vessels and taken ashore in Sicily. Italy shut down its sea rescue mission which has saved the lives of more than 100, 000 migrants from Africa and the Middle East but still responds to emergency calls.

Grievance and prayers in Myanmar. Hundreds gather on the streets of Yangon calling for peace and justice after shelling by the army killed 23 cadets from a rebel military academy. It's the deadliest attack since 2011. Protesters say they want justice.

Marion Barry, the scandal-plagued former mayor of Washington, D.C., has died at the age of 78. Serving as DC mayor from 1979 until 1991, the civil rights activist was once considered one of the nation's most promising black politicians -- that was before serving jail time for smoking crack cocaine. Soon after Washington's so-called "Mayor for Life" was back in the spotlight seeking another term in office. (SOUNDBITE) (English) MARION BARRY, SAYING: "Voters understand that everybody, in their lifetime, has trials and tribulations. I am a remarkable -- I had a remarkable recovery. Most people (inaudible) wouldn't be standing here, they'd be either dead, in a hospital, or feeling sorry for themselves." The course of Barry's career changed on January 18, 1990. On that day hidden cameras captured the married mayor in a Washington hotel room with a younger ex-girlfriend, turned FBI informant where he is seen lighting up a crack pipe. FBI agents and police rushed in for his arrest. It's in this surveillance tape that Barry famously uttered an expletive charging that he was quote "set up." But after six months in jail, and talk of womanizing, drinking and drug use swirling around him, his campaigning paid off and he was reelected for for a fourth term. (SOUNDBITE) (English) MARION BARRY, SAYING: "So the voters in Washington understand the hurt and pain I caused in 90 but also are a redemptive community and forgiving community." The cause of his death has not yet been disclosed.

People's Bank of China announces interest rates cuts

The People's Bank of China announced interest rate cuts on Friday, rallying indexes on the Shanghai and Shenzhen exchanges as trading began early Monday morning.
The country's central bank is slashing benchmark interest rates for the first time in more than two years. It trimmed the benchmark lending rate by 40-basis points to 5.6 percent, and the one-year deposit rate was cut by 25-basis points from 3 percent to 2.75 percent.
Despite the cut in the deposit rate, the PBOC raised the ceiling for deposit rates to 1.2 times the benchmark level from 1.1 times previously.
A PBOC statement said the purpose of cutting the deposit and lending rate is to scale down actual interest rates and lower financing costs for many enterprises.
