Sarkozy looks for political comeback in France
A round of applause as Nicolas Sarkozy prepares for his political comeback. Earlier this month the former French President signaled that he is ready to return to the political ring in his bid to lead the right wing UMP party.

Polls show Sarkozy is the favorite to win the party's chairmanship race November 29th. While the UMP party has been weighed down by a funding scandal, its new leader will hope to benefit from the current unpopularity of the incumbent Socialist president Francois Hollande. Half-way into his five-year term, Hollande's popularity hit a new low this month with a 12 percent approval rating. A shrewd politician, Sarkozy may well have him in his sights.

Abe dissolves parliament
Japanese representatives shout 'banzai' Friday as the parliament's lower house is dissolved. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announced his decision earlier - along with a call for snap elections to be held December 14th. The announcement comes after surprising data earlier this week that showed the economy had slipped into recession in the third quarter. Still recent surveys show support for Abe is no where near dire, which has voters wondering why now? The whole reason is a bit unclear, this person says. But for Abe, analysts say it's all about cementing his grip on power before his ratings slip too far. Next year, he plans to tackle unpopular policies like restarting nuclear reactors that went off-line after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear crisis.

With the kidnapping of General Ruben Dario Alzate on Sunday, peace talks between Colombia's government and leftist FARC rebels have come to a sudden halt. Both sides were supposed to resume their discussions in Havana this week, but President Juan Manuel Santos says no talks are possible while Alzate and two others are being held hostage. (SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) COLOMBIAN PRESIDENT JUAN MANUEL SANTOS, SAYING: "Whilst this situation is unresolved, I reiterate that government negotiators will not travel to Havana to restart the talks." Alzate another military officer and a civilian were taken hostage while on a routine boat patrol. After two years of peace negotiations, the kidnappings came as a surprise. FARC negotiator, Pablo Catatumbo says the hostages will be returned only when the government agrees to a ceasefire. (SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) FARC NEGOTIATOR PABLO CATATUMBO, SAYING: "We believe it is necessary and that this incident forces all of us to reflect upon the necessity of declaring a bilateral ceasefire now." The kidnappings threatens to plunge the country back into its violent past. Colombia is still reeling from nearly 50 years of fighting between the government and the leftist rebels that left some 200,000 dead.

World Toilet Day puts emphasis on dignity and equality
Wednesday is World Toilet Day. It raises awareness of a serious problem. According to the UN, 2.5 billion people in the world still do not have access to proper sanitation, making it a global development priority.
According t the World Health Organization, a person on average goes to the toilet 2,500 times per year. And in total, that is where a person will spend three years of his or her life.
World Toilet Day is a global day of action to raise awareness of the importance of this basic necessity.
It also reminds people of the fact that billions of people do not have access to sanitary toilets, which creates serious health problems in many countries.
Doctors also talk of other issues caused by restroom break habits, which can lead to intestinal diseases, loss of blood flow to the brain and more.
"There are those who see it as a chance for relaxing. Some people use toilets as smoking rooms, others bring their phones and are on them while crouching. Physically, this isn’t a good thing. If one often uses the toilet for too long, this bad habit could even cause problems like rectocele," Doctor Li Anxin, from 302 Military Hospital.
This year's World Toilet Day campaign looks at dignity and equality. It draws attention to how poor sanitation can contribute to gender-based violence.
Around 1 billion people in the world relieve themselves in the open. Many women and girls often wait until it is dark, making them vulnerable to assault. The campaign hopes to lower this number and reduce violence on women.
In addition, statistics show, women on average spend more than twice the time of men while using toilet. But public facilities often provide the same quantity of toilets for both men and women.
In China, toilet construction standards stipulate that in public facilities, the toilets in the ladies' room should be at least 1.5 times more than those in the men's room.
But experts say it is still generally inadequate for the disabled, the elderly and women of men while using toilet.

"It is very inconvenient. There aren't enough toilets," says a woman.
"Sometimes we wait in lines outside the restroom until it’s time for class and the bell rings. So I have to leave with a full bladder, feeling so uncomfortable," says a woman.
