UK outvoted in EU president ballot
Security on high alert as the most powerful men in Europe arrive in Brussels. They were here to choose the new European Commission president. And with 26-2 in favour for Jean Claude Juncker, it was a resounding victory for the former Luxembourg prime minister. British Prime Minister, David Cameron was vocally opposed to Juncker's nomination. He sees Juncker is a figure uninterested in EU reform.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) BRITISH PRIME MINISTER, DAVID CAMERON, SAYING: "In a Europe crying out for reform, we have gone for the career insider, you know, who probably knows every furrow of this building but anyway, we now have to get on with it, but was it the right thing to do, to make this stand? I absolutely believe it was and I would do it all over again."
Despite Cameron finding himself in the minority, there was no gloating from other leaders. They're promising to address his concerns about the future of the EU.
Putin calls for long-term Ukraine ceasefire
With hours remaining on a Ukrainian ceasefire with separatist groups -- Russian President Vladimir Putin weighed in.
(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) RUSSIAN PRESIDENT VLADIMIR PUTIN, SAYING: "Most important is securing a long-term ceasefire as a necessary condition for substantive talks between the authorities in Kiev and representatives of the southeastern regions."
Poroshenko is under pressure from the West to extend the existing ceasefire, but Ukrainian forces worry that it will give the separatists time to regroup. They also point several breaches of the ceasefire, including the downing of a helicopter on Tuesday. Putin also sought to reframe the dialogue, which he says misses the mark.
(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) RUSSIAN PRESIDENT VLADIMIR PUTIN, SAYING: "The unconstitutional revolution in Kiev, attempts to force on the Ukrainian people an artificial choice between Europe and Russia, bringing the society to the split, to a painful internal confrontation." The deadline for the the ceasefire is Friday at 1900GMT.
Benghazi suspect brought to federal court in DC
The man alleged to be the mastermind of the 2012 attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi was brought to this federal courthouse Saturday morning in Washington D.C. The U.S. attorney's office in Washington said Ahmed Abu Khattala is now in federal custody. He's the Libyan militia leader suspected in the attack that killed four Americans including Ambassador Chris Stevens. He was brought to the courthouse from on board the amphibious transport ship, the USS New York. That's where he'd been held since his capture by U.S. special operations forces outside Benghazi on June 15. The criminal complaint against Khattala from the U.S. Justice Department accuses him of killing one person in an attack on a federal facility, and providing material support to terrorists "resulting in death." The charges were filed in July of 2013 but kept under a court seal until this month. Khattala will likely be prosecuted in the U.S. criminal justice system. That's in line with President Barack Obama's policy of prosecuting suspected militants captured overseas through the U.S. justice system, rather than trying them in the military tribunal system at Guantanamo Bay Prison, which he's trying to shut down. The U.S. attorney's office would not say where Khattala being held.
Wedding costs at all-time high
Some couples happily splurge on an Italian castle, others opt for a low-key, just-the-two-of-us bash. As the wedding season is getting into full swing, wedding spending is at an all time high, adding on to the already $70 billion a year industry. Anja Winikka is the site director of the Knot.com, a company that helps couples plan their big day and follows trends in the business. (SOUNDBITE) ANJA WINIKKA, SITE DIRECTOR, THE KNOT.COM (ENGLISH) SPEAKING: "Ever since 2007, 2008 the cost of an average wedding has been on the rise, and it's at the all-time high now. And, you know, this probably, sort of, indicates that couples are willing to spend a little bit more." Average cost of a wedding in the U.S.? Almost $30,000, not counting the honeymoon. The most expensive place to get hitched? Manhattan, with an average bill approaching $90.000. On the other end of the scale, Idaho, a bargain at a little over $16.000 on average. Wherever the wedding is, the perfect wedding dress rings in at close to $1,300. The only thing that seems to be shrinking? The guest list: (SOUNDBITE) ANJA WINIKKA, SITE DIRECTOR, THE KNOT.COM (ENGLISH) SPEAKING: "The number of guests being invited to a wedding has actually gone down, and the spend has gone up, which can only lead us to believe that guests are actually getting the royal treatment more and more." Manhattan-based Kennedy and Kirk Reynolds took that to heart, cutting their guest list to, well, just themselves. (SOUNDBITE) KENNEDY REYNOLDS, RECENTLY MARRIED, (ENGLISH) SPEAKING: "It was the biggest, you know, moment of our life, so we didn't want to cut any corners, and we kind of knew, generally, the way we wanted to go about it, so how it would work into some kind of budget." That meant leaving Manhattan and their guest list behind: (SOUNDBITE) KIRK REYNOLDS, RECENTLY MARRIED, (ENGLISH) SPEAKING: "We wanted to go away somewhere. We wanted to be around the mountains and water, and we wanted it to be just us, and so that was kind of tough to tell the family and some friends, but they all understood. But, moneywise, because it was just us, we actually didn't have to cut corners, so it was great." By having a small ceremony in Iceland, they spent about $20,000. (SOUNDBITE) KENNEDY REYNOLDS, RECENTLY MARRIED, (ENGLISH) SPEAKING: "Getting married in another country was a big part of our expense. We could have just as easily kind of eloped or have a two person wedding here in the states, and it would have been beautiful. We talked about that, you know, we've got Central Park right here, so that would have been lovely, but we decided to go some place we haven't been, and so that was an expense but, again, totally worth it." Because not only did they have their once-in-a-lifetime wedding moment, they had their journey to Iceland to remember as well. Their big splurge? Bringing their photographer with them to document it all for the friends and family that couldn't be there. (SOUNDBITE) KENNEDY REYNOLDS, RECENTLY MARRIED, (ENGLISH) SPEAKING: "It was just such a special moment for us, and there was no part of us that came back and thought 'oh man we've got to, you know, pay off this wedding.' It was completely, absolutely, completely worth it."

Weekly Address: Focusing on the Economic Priorities for the Middle Class Nationwide
WASHINGTON, DC — In this week’s address, the President discussed his recent trip to Minneapolis where he met a working mother named Rebekah, who wrote the President to share the challenges her family and many middle class Americans are facing where they work hard and sacrifice yet still can’t seem to get ahead. But instead of focusing on growing the middle class and expanding opportunity for all, Republicans in Congress continue to block commonsense economic proposals such as raising the minimum wage, extending unemployment insurance and making college more affordable. The President will keep fighting his economic priorities in the weeks and months ahead, because he knows the best way to expand opportunity for all hardworking Americans and continue to strengthen the economy is to grow it from the middle-out.
Remarks of President Barack Obama
Weekly Address
The White House
June 28, 2014
Hi, everybody. This week, I spent a couple days in Minneapolis, talking with people about their lives – their concerns, their successes, and their hopes for the future.
I went because of a letter I received from a working mother named Rebekah, who shared with me the hardships her young family has faced since the financial crisis. She and her husband Ben were just newlyweds expecting their first child, Jack, when the housing crash dried up his contracting business. He took what jobs he could, and Rebekah took out student loans and retrained for a new career. They sacrificed – for their kids, and for each other. And five years later, they’ve paid off debt, bought their first home, and had their second son, Henry.
In her letter to me, she wrote, “We are a strong, tight-knit family who has made it through some very, very hard times.” And in many ways, that’s America’s story these past five years. We are a strong, tight-knit family that’s made it through some very tough times.
Today, over the past 51 months, our businesses have created 9.4 million new jobs. By measure after measure, our economy is doing better than it was five years ago.
But as Rebekah also wrote in her letter, there are still too many middle-class families like hers who do everything right – who work hard and who sacrifice – but can’t seem to get ahead. It feels like the odds are stacked against them. And with just a small change in our priorities, we could fix that.
The problem is, Republicans in Congress keep blocking or voting down almost every serious idea to strengthen the middle class. This year alone, they’ve said no to raising the minimum wage, no to fair pay, no to student loan reform, no to extending unemployment insurance. And rather than invest in education that helps working families get ahead, they actually voted to give another massive tax cut to the wealthiest Americans.
This obstruction keeps the system rigged for those at the top, and rigged against the middle class. And as long as they insist on doing it, I’ll keep taking actions on my own – like the actions I’ve taken already to attract new jobs, lift workers’ wages, and help students pay off their loans. I’ll do my job. And if it makes Republicans in Congress mad that I’m trying to help people out, they can join me, and we’ll do it together.
The point is, we could do so much more as a country – as a strong, tight-knit family – if Republicans in Congress were less interested in stacking the deck for those at the top, and more interested in growing the economy for everybody.
So rather than more tax breaks for millionaires, let’s give more tax breaks to help working families pay for child care or college. Rather than protect tax loopholes that let big corporations set up tax shelters overseas, let’s put people to work rebuilding roads and bridges right here in America. Rather than stack the decks in favor of those who’ve already succeeded, let’s realize that we are stronger as a nation when we offer a fair shot to every American.
I’m going to spend some time talking about these very choices in the week ahead. That’s because we know from our history that our economy doesn’t grow from the top-down, it grows from the middle-out. We do better when the middle class does better. That’s the American way. That’s what I believe in. And that’s what I’ll keep fighting for.
Have a great Fourth of July, everybody – and good luck to Team USA down in Brazil.
Thanks.
