Beats

Apple close to buying Beats
Beats
Apple could be dancing to a new beat. The company that revolutionized the music industry is close to buying the hip maker of those Dr. Dre headphones and speakers, Beats Electronics. Sources say Apple is prepared to dish up $3.2 billion which would make Beats the largest Apple acquisition ever. Apple is under intense pressure to deliver an exciting new product as sales of iPhones and iTunes slow down. Here's what Apple would get: the hot Beats brand and products, a paid-subscription-based music service, and an entrepreneur in co-founder Jimmy Iovine. But some analysts are saying, beats me? PiperJaffray senior analyst Gene Munster says, "Apple already has a world class brand and has never acquired a brand for a brand's sake. Separately, we are not aware of any intellectual property within Beats that would drive the acquisition justification beyond the brand." CLSA analyst Avi Silver says Beat's customized streaming service is better than Apple's own iRadio but inferior to Spotify's. So he argues, "Why acquire Beats instead of market leader Spotify?" Apple can afford a lot with its $130 billion cash hoard. Apple's stock, which hit $600 this week, fell at the start of trade.

The U.S. Coast Guard and the Drug Enforcement Agency unload more than 2,100 pounds of marijuana and 35 kilos of cocaine in Miami. The Coast Guard says the drugs have a combined wholesale value of more than $3 million, seized on separate occasions. On May 3, the Coast Guard stopped a vessel in the Caribbean after five people aboard allegedly started throwing bags into the water and attempted to flee. A drug enforcement unit took the suspects into custody and recovered more than 1,800 pounds of marijuana and 35 kilos of cocaine from the sea. In a separate operation on May 2, officials seized more than 220 pounds of marijuana after the Coast Guard spotted an abandoned vessel off the coast of Haiti.

A church service on Victory Day in Kiev. It's a time to commemorate the fallen from WWII, and celebrate the victory over Nazi Germany when Russia and Ukraine were on the same side. After the service Ukraine's Prime Minister Arseny Yatsenyuk pointed to the irony on this Victory Day.
(SOUNDBITE) (Ukrainian) UKRAINIAN PRIME MINISTER, ARSENY YATSENIUK, SAYING: "Sixty-nine years ago we were fighting, shoulder-to-shoulder, with Russia, against fascism, and we won. But today Russia started a war against Ukraine, and history is repeating itself in a different way. Russia has to stop supporting terrorists who are killing peaceful people in Ukraine and against whom we have started an anti-terrorist operation." He called for unity.

(SOUNDBITE) (Ukrainian) UKRAINIAN PRIME MINISTER, ARSENY YATSENIUK, SAYING: "Our country needs unity, dialogue and peace but peace will come when terrorists are not supported by Russia, which 69 years ago was standing shoulder-to-shoulder with us. And today it is Germany, Great Britain and the U.S. who are standing shoulder-to-shoulder with us."

In Kiev they marked the day with solders marching thorough the streets. War veterans are honored. While some dance in the street, one Afghan war vet struggles to make sense of more recent history.
(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) WAR VETERAN WHO FOUGHT IN AFGHANISTAN, EDOUARD KHIMIKOV, SAYING: "My mother is Ukrainian, my father is Russian. What should I do? Who should I shoot? Should I shoot my right hand with my left hand or my left hand with my right hand? The people in the Ukrainian government are idiots. What did they do? They brought people to their knees and when the people in the east of Ukraine started complaining, they sent APCs against them."
While they honor the past in Kiev-- Ukraine faces more divisions with pro-Moscow rebels planning a referendum in eastern Ukraine to follow Crimea in breaking from Kiev.

China to end mandatory animal testing for cosmetics
Protecting the rights of animals has become a big issue in many countries, Chinese law currently requires all cosmetics products to be tested on animals -- meaning some international brands have stayed out of the mainland. But the Chinese Government says that from this summer, cosmetics companies will be able to choose whether or not to test on live animals. Ahead of the move, Chinese scientists are now learning about alternative test methods.
Cosmetics are big business in China.
Until now, the fourth-largest cosmetics market in the world has mainly relied on animal-testing to ensure consumer safety.
Each year, some 300-thousand live animals undergo painful testing in Chinese laboratories. But the Government now wants to adopt alternative methods, that have proven track records in other countries.
"Alternative methods use complicated techniques and need more international cooperation." Dr. Cheng Shujun, Guangdong Inspection and Quarantine Bureau said.Global institutes and experts can help us build advanced labs and improve our experimental ability.
Each year millions of animals, such as mice, rabbits and monkeys are tested worldwide for scientific purposes.
The new regulation will allow both Chinese and foreign companies operating on the Mainland the option to avoid animal testing, if they use ingredients that have already been tested as safe.
Until now, Chinese scientists have had limited access to non-animal testing techniques and facilities. But China is now set to learn from international expertise, and become better equipped.
In-vitro and other non-animal techniques will be widely used.
"This alternative method training is very helpful. We mainly focus on experimental practice." Kang Hua, Researcher of Zhejiang Food and Drug Inspecton Inst. said.
The country is rolling out the welcoming mat to companies that refused animal testing and couldn’t get a slice of China’s cosmetics pie.
Investors begin cashing in Alibaba’s Taobao
As Alibaba officially files for what is going to be the biggest tech IPO ever, the race is on for retail investors to make money from its listing. But as Cathy Yang reports, some of Hong Kong’s more entrepreneurial retail investors have already begun cashing in: buying and selling goods on Alibaba’s Taobao.
Twenty-five year-old Katy Cheung blends in quite nicely into the Hong Kong lunch crowd just tinkering away on her smartphone. But it’s not Facebook nor Twitter she’s logging on to – but Alibaba’s online retail platform Taobao. She’s making extra money on top of her regular daytime job.
"I got started eight to nine months ago. I was just buying accessories, clothing and bags for myself, until I found out that a lot of stuff on Taobao are sold here in Hong Kong for a higher price. So I started re-selling some of them, posting them on Instagram or Facebook." Katy Cheung said.
Deliveries like these from Taobao have become a regular fixture in offices: folks ordering stuff online and getting them quickly after. Say if I were to go to Taobao’s website and wanted to buy this little black dress, I would spend only five U-S dollars. Transactions like these on Taobao and its other online retail portal T-mall have amounted to 240 billion U-S dollars last year – more than those of e-Bay and Amazon-dot-com combined. And that has helped Alibaba corner what independent brokerage CLSA says now accounts for 80 per cent of the Mainland’s shopping market.
Some bullish forecasts even point to Alibaba’s market value reaching over a quarter of a trillion dollars – making it the fourth-biggest technology firm after Apple,
Google and Microsoft. And monetizing e-commerce is exactly what analysts makes Alibaba’s upcoming IPO – a strong buy.
"I think in the meantime we will still see selling pressure. Right now sentiment is very bad. Actually valuation is not really overstretched. Approaching the listing of Alibaba actually we may see a recovery because right now people are preparing for the IPO." Alex Wong, Director of Asset Management, Ample Financial Group said.
Reason why the tech sector has seen recent weakness in the stock market. Rival Tencent shares in Hong Kong on Wednesday fell, hours after Alibaba officially filed its application for IPO listing in the US, in what will be the biggest tech offering ever.
But Katy is oblivious to all that. She doesn’t even know about Alibaba, nor its listing. But she does know Alibaba’s Taobao by heart, and finds enough of a payback spending lunch break trawling through it – if only to quell that occasional urge to splurge.
