Two women were dragged from the daily briefing for journalists by Malaysian police. The pair were forcibly removed after trying to unfurl a banner. One was knocked over in the confusion. Malaysian and U.S. officials believe the aircraft was deliberately diverted perhaps thousands of miles off course, but a background search of the passengers and crew aboard has not yielded any clues.

More than two thousand north African migrants make it to safety after Italian naval and coast guard vessels come to their rescue. The rescue underscores the scale of illegal migration into southern Europe. The 48 hour mission was carried out off the southern coast of Sicily, and follows a similar rescue of some 500 just a day before. But the problem is not new. Italy has struggled for decades with a steady stream of people traveling in small, unsafe boats from North Africa. But since the turmoil of the Arab Spring beginning in 2011, the number coming to Italy from that region is on the rise -- with no end in sight. Italy increased its naval and air patrols off the coast of Sicily after hundreds of migrants drowned last year in two separate disasters.

Libyan rebel leader calls US Navy "pirates" after tanker seized

The US naval forces seized the tanker full of oil after it had sailed from this rebel held port in the east of Libya. Ibrahim Jathran and his followers are seeking greater autonomy in the eastern area and have blocked several ports. This tanker was his latest attempt to export oil independently of Tripoli. Jathran described the U.S. navy operation as "piracy".

Three Russian flags were reported flying at one of the entrances to Ukraine’s naval headquarters in the Crimean port of Sevastopol on Wednesday, suggesting that at least some of the base was under the control of pro-Russian forces.
The Interfax news agency quoted a defense official as saying on Wednesday Russia’s military started large-scale aviation exercises in western regions, indicating the exercises were taking place mostly in northwestern regions that do not border Ukraine. Russia’s top crude oil producer Rosneft says it has no plans to cut its activity in Ukraine.

Investigators have discovered the runways of five airports near the Indian Ocean loaded into Captain Zaharie Ahmad Shah's home-made flight simulator.
An unnamed source told local Malay daily newspaper "Berita Harian" the simulation programs are based on runways at the Male International Airport in Maldives, an airport owned by the U.S. on Diego Garcia, and three other runways in India and Sri Lanka. All the airports have runway lengths of 1,000 meters.
At a press conference on Monday, Malaysia's acting transport minister Hishammuddin Hussein denied speculation that the plane could have landed at the U.S. military base on Diego Garcia.
The unnamed source said it was too early to make any conclusions on the new findings, but the information will be investigated.
