This was where Nelson Mandela spent his last 14 months of incarceration -- the Victor Verster prison in Paarl, just outside Cape Town. On Monday, Leaders of the African National Congress party paid tribute to Mandela by visiting the prison.

Though Mandela wrote 'A Long Walk to Freedom,' I always go and look at it biblically, that the 40 years of a journey to the land of promise means that there were difficult moments and difficult times, and this is but one example."

From 1988, Mandela was living in a private cottage inside the prison, after being in and out of hospital, for tuberculosis treatment. He stayed here until his historic release in February 11, 1990.

A mass funeral in Yemen, for the 52 people killed in last week's attack on the defense ministry. An attacker drove a car packed with explosives into the gate of the ministry's compound. Gunmen in another vehicle opened fire on soldiers, as well as doctors and nurses working at the hospital inside.

Thai PM dissolves parliament in face of protests

Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra dissolved parliament on Monday (December 9), and called for snap elections.

Tens of thousands of protesters have been on the streets for three weeks, calling for her resignation. Last week police defended key government buildings from protesters using tear gas and rubber bullets. But calm was restored for the king's birthday. Protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban has said he is not interested in a general election. Instead he wants a vaguely defined "people's council" to run the country. The government has not used excessive force against the protesters but clashes have erupted in which five people have been killed and many more injured.

The national college entrance exam, known as the "Gaokao" has been used to evaluate Chinese students for three decades. The Ministry of Education has worked out a plan for reforming exams and enrollment. The Ministry will solicit public opinions before its release.
For too long, the "Gaokao" has been the only exam that determines a student’s destiny.
"Currently, the education system in China is all about scores... No matter the evaluation system or the way we select talents. That’s the key problem of the education system, as far as many people are concerned." Vice Minister of Education Liu Limin said.
The Ministry of Education wants to change that through reforms. It will reduce the number of exam subjects. English will be removed from the Gaokao. Instead, students can take English exams more than once a year. Only the best result will be counted. China will also set up a multi-evaluation system. Admissions will not be based solely on test performance.
"We hope to release an integrated plan of examination and enrollment reform in 2014. Through pilot programs in some cities, we hope to publicize it to the whole country in 2017. Finally in 2020, we can set up a well-rounded education system.” Liu said.
Beijing is one of the pilot cities to see less English, more Chinese in the Gaokao. Starting from 2016, Beijing will reduce the point value of English from 150 to 100. More points will be given to Chinese.
Students will be able to take the English exam twice a year. The best score in three years will be counted to the Gaokao total score.

The Muslim Brotherhood’s spiritual guide, Mohamed Badie, and eight other high-ranking members of the group have made their first appearance in a Cairo court since being arrested in August.
It’s one of several cases filed against the men, accusing them of organizing violent protests and acquiring weapons. In Monday’s hearing, the prosecution claimed the members were responsible for killing 9 civilians during a rally in Giza. Among the defendants are Egypt’s former Minister of Supply and several prominant leaders in the Brotherhood.
However, the defendants accused the court of treason and chanted slogans against the country’s current interim government. During Monday’s procedural session, the court listened to the defense’s demands and postponed the trial until February 11th.
"The authorities from the coup are putting honorable men on trial. Dr. Bassem was a man whose work all Egyptians praised, even those against Morsi. These trials are not legal." said Mohamed Ouda, Cousin of Defendant Bassem Ouda.
"They are trying 9 people, doctors and preachers, accusing them of protesting, which is their right. There is no evidence showing they have attacked any person or property, therefore we do not recognize this court. They are all charges forged against them.” said Inas Hegazy, Wife of Defendant Safwat Hegazy.
"The defendants were disturbing the court with their chanting. They were chanting against the court. But the court managed to control the situation; it was very patient. The court even gave them room to speak and share their thoughts and opinions in the case." said Mahmoud El Dakhl, Lawyer.
