U.S. President Barack Obama is expected to nominate Janet Yellen Wednesday to become the next head of the Federal Reserve and the first woman to lead the institution in its 100-year history. The 67-year old Vice Chairman of the Fed has been a forceful advocate of aggressive action to drive down unemployment. Her main challenge ahead will be winding down the extraordinary policy measures the Fed has taken in the last five years to stem the financial crisis. If confirmed by the U.S. Senate, she would replace Ben Bernanke, whose second four-year term expires Jan. 31.
Anti-army protests staged at Egyptian universities
Hundreds of Muslim Brotherhood supporters take to the streets of Egypt to protest against the army after deadly clashes over the weekend. Here students gather outside Zagazig University in Sharqia in defiance, chanting "Down with the military". The same scenes were repeated at Cairo's university campus. Supporters of deposed President Mohamed Mursi urged them to gather after 57 people died and hundreds were wounded on Sunday.
(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) UNIDENTIFIED PRO-MURSI STUDENT OF ZAGAZIG UNIVERSITY, SAYING: "We are here to say no to oppression.Where is our president? Why are our colleagues and brothers dying? Where has legitimacy gone? Where is the constitution and democracy that they (anti-Mursi) are calling for? We keep dying and nobody cares. We are being humiliated and nobody cares. In the end, we will die and we know that nobody will help us. But, nevertheless, we will continue objecting to what is going on, we will object until we die, we will see our demands met or we'll die, we will stand our ground."
But on Tuesday there was no security forces at Zagazig University, where Mursi had once taught. Instead students clashed with local residents who opposed the Muslim Brotherhood. Political tensions have gripped Egypt since the army ousted Mursi in July, installing an interim government. The authorities have promised fair elections soon, while cracking down hard on the Brotherhood Islamist organisation.
Fire kills nine at Bangladesh garment factory
The fire broke out late Tuesday in the knitting section of this garment factory in Gazipur, near the Bangladesh capital. At least nine employees of Aswad Composite Mills factory died in the blaze and scores more were injured.
(SOUNDBITE) (Nur Nabi) UNNAMED FACTORY WORKER, SAYING: "In the evening when fire broke out I came here to search for my uncle who was working in this factory, I have not yet found him. I found out that the fire started from a stander machine, the silencer of the machine exploded, the fire spread and the factory caught fire. Immediately after the fire many people ran out of the factory but a few could not get out."
As firefighters continue to douse the flames of the smouldering rubble questions remain about the cause of the fire. Grieving friends and relatives form a line to view the bodies. This is just one of many disasters in Bangladeshi factories. There's been a series of deadly fires and a building collapse in April that killed more than 1100 people. The issue has raised global concern over safety standards in Bangladesh's garment industry, where low wages has helped to make the country the world's second largest apparel exporter after China.

Competition for better jobs in China is growing among the nation’s young people. But instead of boosting their resumes or improving their interview skills, some are now seeking an edge on other job applicants through plastic surgery. In fact, some are going so far as to travel to South Korea for their medical procedures.
26-year-old Liu Jiajia is going under the knife today at this medical clinic located in southern Seoul. She doesn’t suffer from any medical ailment, instead she has chosen a cosmetic surgical procedure to augment her facial structure, which she believes will give her the confidence to hit the job market.
"You will have better chances if you are both capable and good-looking when you have job interviews," Liu said.
Liu is among thousands of Chinese job seekers who are making the trip across the Yellow Sea in order to enhance their appearance. According to the Korea Tourism Organization, over 30,000 Chinese nationals entered South Korea on medical tourism visas last year.
Among them, nearly two-thirds underwent cosmetic procedures.
"My friend introduced me to this clinic. I am very careful of choosing hospital. My friend told me that she had good results.
She said that many South Korean celebrities have come here. And I found the chairman of the hosptial is very careful and serious, so I decided to do the surgery here," Liu said.
The cost of such surgical procedures is generally more expensive in Korea, yet experts say that the highly skilled craftsmanship of Korean doctors makes the trip worthwhile.
And often times, patients leave satisfied before they head out into the workforce.
"Because of Korea’s superior surgical skills, the majority of overseas patients leave satisfied, and they go and pass the word to friends and relatives," said Dr. Kim Dongha, head of Be for Plastic Surgery Clinic.
Dr. Kim offers a variety of services for his Chinese client, and his staff are specially trained to cater to Chinese patients, even offering on-the-spot interpretation.
This clinic is just one of among dozens in this neighborhood alone that target youngsters like Liu Jiajia to give them the confidence they need when they embark on their job search.
As the saying goes, first impressions are the most lasting. Hence, job recruiters say if a hiring decision comes down to two final candidates with the exact same qualifications, your appearance could be the deciding factor.

Golden week sees retail sales surge
China’s National Day holidays, a.k.a the golden week, has wrapped up with sales in retail and dining pocketing in 870 billion yuan, or 142 billion U.S dollars.
Golden week saw a big jump in China’s domestic consumption, adding a much needed kick to the country’s slowing economy.
Statistics from China’s Ministry of Commerce show sales of retail and catering businesses rallied by almost 14 percent during the holidays year on year.
Hainan island, a popular travel destination has seen its sales surge by as much as 19 percent over the same period last year.
"There is very obvious effect on consumption. Sales of clothing, digital electronics, and home appliances are all very encouraging. This shows Chinese people are prompted by the holiday spirit to buy durable goods, and trendy clothes. "said Zhao Ping, Deputy Director of Consumer Economy Research Dept.of MOFCOM.
However, some worry that strong domestic demands could push up prices, exacerbating inflationary pressure. Official data show, the prices for vegetable rose 3.2 percent over the holidays.
But Zhao said overall prices are still stable, with pork rising mildly, and soybean oil falling a little.
"After the holidays, demands would fall slightly, so inflationary pressure should start to ease."said Zhao.
A big rise in sales with moderate price increases are signs for a healthy economy. But many in China are still hoping for a more enjoyable holiday experience, Quality services and less crowded tourist attractions may be the goal for the next golden week.
