英国是一个岛国，因此英语里有很多关于fish的谚语。原文不太可能真的是在说鱼，因为谁都知道大海里有的是鱼，正如英语谚语所说：

There are plenty more fish in the sea.海里的鱼多着呢！

There are as good fish in the sea as ever came out of it.海里有的是鱼，永远打不完。

实际上这两句谚语也只是拿鱼作比方，常用于劝说失恋的人，意思相当于“天涯何处无芳草。原文里not the only fish inthe sea的意思是“并非仅有的/唯一的/稀罕的（东西)”。
