The response from Washington to Hassan Rouhani's speech at the UN --- calling the Iranian President's latest diplomatic gesture a promising first start.
SOUNDBITE: White House Spokesman Jay Carney saying: "We are very interested in testing the assertions about that interest on behalf of the Iranians in resolving this conflict diplomatically."
Carney tempered his enthusiasm adding: SOUNDBITE: White House Spokesman Jay Carney saying: "Actions are what matter and substantive negotiations over Iran's nuclear program will be the test, will provide the test over whether Iran is serious about resolving the international community's concerns and we are engaged in that process. As you know, Secretary Kerry will be with his Iranian counterpart in the P5+1 peace process this week. So, that's the beginning of what we hope will be progress towards resolving this problem."
In Jerusalem --- officials are wary of Iran's more genial public face. SOUNDBITE: Spokesperson of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Mark Regev saying: "Our concern is, that the Iranian promises, the Iranian words of good faith, are in fact a smokescreen, a cover for the continuation of their aggressive nuclear programs. And what are the facts? Israel will look at what Iran does, not what it says. And we would urge the international community to do exactly the same."
Iran's fist test comes later this week when U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry meets with his Iranian counterpart --- the first time in more than six years that high level officials have sat down together.

The son of two famous Chinese singers Li Shuangjiang and Meng Ge is to spend the next 10 years in jail for rape. The sentence was announced by the Haidian District People’s Court in Beijing Thursday morning. 4 of Li’s accomplices were also given sentences that varied in length.
Being born into a privileged family didn’t guarantee this 17 year old a promising future.
He is going to spend the best part of his youth behind bars.
4 out of the 5 perpetrators are under 18. So the trial wasn’t open to the public in order to protect the minors. Apart from Li, the other 4 perpetrators are going to spend 3 to 12 years in prison. The case has drawn intense public interest from the beginning due to the Li’s family background. And online users have questioned whether the court was pressured into handing out a harsh verdict due to public anger over the crimes committed by children of the elite. The court denies such accusations.
Li’s father Li Shuangjiang is a famous singer from the People’s Liberation Army. And Li’s mother is also a singer in the PLA. The family has a strong military background. When the trial opened in late August, many people pointed their finger at his privileged background.
"Everyone is equal and the verdict should not be affected by his family background and wealth."
"The rich have many more advantages than ordinary people when it comes to situations like this."
"This is cruel. Nowadays, the rich and powerful control our society."
In fact, this is not the first time Li has gotten his family into trouble. Back in 2011, Li beat up a couple and caused injuries during a road rage incident. He was 15 at the time and did not have a driver’s licence. He was then sent to a government correctional facility for a year. His father apologised to the couple and to the public afterwards. But it seems the younger Li didn’t learn his lesson.
The court announced on its Weibo account that Li was the primary perpetrator of the gang rape case and showed no repentance. Therefore he was given the harshest sentence of the 4 under 18.

U.S. senate takes first step to avert gov’t shutdown
U.S. budget battles have created a lot of uncertainty for the markets in the past few years. Two big budget votes are scheduled for October which will determine whether the government can pay its bills. On Wednesday, the situation became a bit clearer as the U.S. Senate voted unanimously to clear a key procedural hurdle on passing a funding bill to avert a government shutdown in six days.
Despite the overwhelming support, the legislation still faces several hurdles that must be overcome as lawmakers in both parties work to avoid a partial shutdown. Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew said Wednesday that the government will have exhausted its borrowing authority by October 17th, leaving the US just 30 billion dollars of cash on hand to pay its bills. To avoid a partial government shutdown, a single, agreed-upon legislation must be approved by Congress and signed by President Obama next Tuesday.
