Iraq blasts hit Shi'ite areas
At least five people lost their lives when a car packed with explosives was detonated in this Shi'ite district of eastern Baghdad. Police said another 17 were wounded in the blast on Sunday. At about the same time another bomb went off at a street cafe in the northern, Al Shuala district which is also mainly Shi'ite. At least two people were killed and ten more wounded. The bombings were part of a wave of bloodshed across Iraq on Sunday as explosions and shootings claimed at least 36 lives. There was no immediate claim of responsibility although Sunni Islamist insurgents have been regaining momentum in recent months. The United Nations says about 800 Iraqis were killed in August. More than a third of the deadly attacks happened in Baghdad. Eighteen months after the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq there are fears of a return to the sectarian slaughter of the past when the monthly death toll sometimes passed 3,000.

Female Afghan police official dies
Lieutenant Negara was shot by a gunman on her way to work. She was a senior officer with the Afghan police force in Helmand Province. She'd been expected to survive her injuries. That prognosis proved overly optimistic. Just two months earlier her predecessor, also a woman, met exactly the same fate. Another female officer at Negara's funeral on Monday said the Taliban had threatened to kill all women in the force.

U.N. confirms sarin gas used in Syria attack
It's the report much of the Western world has been waiting for. But it was far from a slam dunk.
SOUNDBITE: UNITED NATIONS SECRETARY GENERAL BAN KI-MOON SAYING: "Chemical weapons were used on a relatively large scale in the Ghouta area of Damascus on August 21st, causing numerous casualties, particularly among civilians. This is the most significant, confirmed use of chemical weapons against civilians since Sadam Hussein used them in Halabja in 1988, the worst use of weapons of mass destruction in the 21st century."
According to the report, 85 percent of the blood samples taken by the UN's investigators tested positive for sarin. Ban stopped short of assigning blame for the attack but did add:
据报告,联合国调查人员检测的85%的血液样本呈现沙林毒气阳性 。潘基文并未明确地谴责袭击事件,但是他补充说:
SOUNDBITE: UNITED NATIONS SECRETARY GENERAL BAN KI-MOON SAYING: "Do not slaughter your people with gas." The report came on a day filled with general agreements between the U.S. and Russia. First ... Syria must hand over its chemical weapons. But when and how that should happen is a matter of debate. The U.S. is calling for a complete and immediate handover of chemical weapons --- a point which prompted this response from Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
SOUNDBITE: RUSSIAN FOREIGN MINISTER SERGEI LAVROV SAYING (RUSSIAN): "As for the statements made by our partners, saying that a resolution on Chapter VII has to be adopted as quickly as by the end of the week, well, this, first of all, shows lack of understanding of what John Kerry and I agreed upon."
The U.S., along with the UK and France say they plan to seek binding deadlines for chemical weapons removal in a UN resolution this week.
Baby-killer charged with intentional homicide in Beijing
The trial of a Beijing man who caused the death of a 2-year-old toddler by throwing her with force onto the ground following an altercation with her mother is charged with intentional homicide. Another man who aided his escape faces a charge of harboring a criminal.
The public trial of the case has been held by Beijing First Intermediate People’s Court. The defendant, Han Lei, was charged with intentional homicide, but denied the charge.
Defendant Han Lei said, "I never intended to hurt anyone, let alone a baby. I was not aware I was slamming a baby to the ground. I thought it was just a shopping cart."
But another defendant in the case, Li Ming, testified that Han had been aware of the infant, and that as he held the baby in the air, he tried to stop him, but failed.
Li said, "He behaved like a mad person. He held up the baby, and slammed her straight into the ground."
The prosecution presented written testimonies and surveillance video at the trail. The evidence pointed to Han Lei’s guilt.
Prosecutor said, "We accuse Han Lei of intentional homicide, both subjectively and objectively."
The verdict has yet to be announced by the court. Prosecutors recommended that Han be given the death sentence. It all started on July 23rd, when a woman and her two-year-old daughter passed a bus stop in southern Beijing and got into a violent dispute over a parking spot with two men in a car. Han Lei attacked the mother. He pulled the infant from her stroller, and threw her with great force to the ground. The two men then drove away. The baby girl died two days later. The girl’s killer, a prisoner, sentenced to life and released on parole for good behavior, will now remain behind bars.
Danone bribes hospitals to push baby milk
A new baby formula scandal is involving corruption in hospitals. More than 20 million babies are born in China each year. 70 percent of are fed with milk formula. The government has banned hospitals from marketing milk powder. But that hasn't stopped it happening.
This baby was born not long ago in Tianjin, and has just finished the milk formula given by a nurse.
Family member said, "The hospital prepared this, we know nothing about it."
CCTV asked around mothers and their families but none seem to have any knowledge about the first milk their baby receives.
"First milk? I don’t know. I never asked them, the hospital must have arranged this. They never asked me."
Most of of the time, the newborns are in this room, fed with milk powder provided by the hospital. The mothers don’t have a say.
Investigations lead to a contact who used to work for the dairy company Danone Dumex as a sales manager. She told CCTV this disturbing fact.
"You give money. Every year we worked with the hospitals and gave them money. Hundreds of thousands, there’s a secret agreement."
That secret is explained on this sheet the contact sent us.
It’s a name list of the doctors and nurses who receive money from the dairy company under the guise of "sponsorship".
Pretending to represent a dairy company, Our reporter also contacted one of the doctors on the list who agreed to meet up.
"You can sponsor academic activities at the hospital. 10,000 to 20,000 yuan.
This nurse says they receive kick-backs if they successfully introduced one can of powder to the baby’s parents.
This is confirmed by a shop owner in the hospital.
"You have to get the nurses to promote for you. Otherwise, this brand, for instance, only one can was sold in half a year."
Cut-throat competition between dairy companies for the first feed of milk a baby takes. Another former business practitioner tells us why.
"As soon as the baby is born, it doesn’t matter if you agree or not, it doesn’t matter if the mother can breast feed or not, the baby is fed with milk powder. It’s the norm."
Reporter," When the first sip is from Dumex, what impact will it have on the baby?"
"She’ll reject the mother’s breast milk, the taste is different."
After this story was broadcast, Our reporter approached the Beijing office of Dumex.
There were clearly people inside, but no one came to the door.
And so far, calls to the office chief have gone unanswered.
