Russian President Vladimir Putin has agreed to pardon former political opponent and oil tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky. Putin made the surprise announcement during a news conference Thursday saying Khodorkovsky had asked for a pardon in a written letter because his mother was ill. Khodorkovsky was jailed in 2003 on tax evasion and fraud charges. His imprisonment became a symbol for what critics say is the Kremlin's abuse of the courts for political ends. Political analyst say the move was Putin's attempt to silence his critics in the West- and just in time too as Russia is set to host the Winter Olympics in 2014.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) POLITICAL ANALYST MARIA LIPMAN, SAYING: "At a time when he is referred to as bad, as an evil leader, as a leader of Russia which is launching a campaign of expansion, a leader who is near imperialistic, he suddenly attracts the whole world to himself as a merciful leader who can pardon." Putin also said two members of the punk rock group Pussy Riot would also be freed on amnesty.

Theatre collapse victims treated at area hospitals

Nearly 90 people injured when the ceiling of a theatre in London caved in during a performance Thursday night are being treated at area hospitals. Medical staff were on hand at St. Thomas' Hospital to receive the wounded... most of whom suffered head injuries. It happened at the Apollo Theatre in London's West End entertainment district during a packed performance of "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time." Officials said a 10 meter square section of ornate plaster ceiling fell onto the audience during the show. Police say it's too early to tell what caused the ceiling to fall.

Christmas Eve is approaching fast and here in the Arctic Circle one jolly old man and his helpers are busy preparing for their biggest night of the year. This is Santa Claus village. Inside the main post office, around half a million letters are being sorted according to country and read in their original language. They all end up with Santa who says this year he has a wish of his own.

Throughout the year Santa Claus resides in this village located in Rovaniemi in Finland, where over 300,000 people visited him last year. But in about a week he will visit children everywhere when he makes his famous round-the-world journey.

The makers of popular Chinese cartoon Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf, have been held legally responsible for an incident that left 2 children injured, after another boy imitated a scene from the show. The case is shedding renewed light on the debate about cartoon violence and how responsible parents and companies that make them are.
Turns out, this cartoon is not pleasant for all.
Two schoolboys, who are also brothers, were seriously burned after another boy acted out a shocking attack he had seen on an episode of Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf.
One of the brothers suffered burns to 80% of his body, the other was less seriously injured with burns covering 40%.
The father of the two injured children sued the show’s producer, Guangzhou’s Creative Power Entertaining company, and the parents of the child who set the fire.
The cartoon maker has been forced to pay 39-thousand yuan to the victims’ family.
“Violent scenes were shown in the production and distribution of the cartoon Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf, negatively impacting the behaviour of the under-age victims. The production company hasn’t fulfilled its obligation, and is jointly responsible for the incident.” Jiangsu province Higher People’s Court judge said.
The cartoon is aimed at children, so producers are obliged to scrutinize the violence in it carefully, said the court, adding that inappropriate scenes should be cut and warnings given.
Many cartoon production companies have started revising inappropriate content in their shows. Main changes involve revising the script, deleting violent scenes and putting parental advisory warnings.
China has become the biggest cartoon producer, making over 200,000 minutes of animation per year. Driven by profit, some animation companies ignore the negative effects of violence and lewd content, in order to boost ratings.
Chinese authorities are drafting "Standards for domestic cartoons", to regulate the content of animation. The standards will be released this month.

Hong Kong’s IPO scene turns hotter as temperatures drop in the city. In a span of eight days, China Everbright Bank trumps China Cinda Asset Management as the biggest initial public offering in Hong Kong for the year, raising three billion US dollars on Friday.
Finally listed after two failed attempts. China Everbright Bank displaces China Cinda’s listing just over a week ago as it becomes the largest IPO for the year, based on the number of shares that investors ordered before the launch. The Mainland’s eleventh largest bank by assets – plans to use the money to shore up its capital to meet stricter regulatory requirements. For Everbright Chairman Tang Shuangning, it is well worth the wait.
A week before the share sale, Everbright secured over one-point-seven billion U-S dollars from 19 cornerstone investors.
Those who committed to hold their stake for a certain period include Canadian insurer Sun Life Financial and U-S insurer Prudential Financial.
Even before the Hong Kong listing, Everbright Bank had already been trading in Shanghai. It’s the third Chinese bank to launch an IPO in Hong Kong in recent weeks after Bank of Chongqing and Huishang Bank. The listing culminates a two-year wait, when Everbright attempted to raise as much as six billion U-S dollars in 20-11. It tried again in May last year –before canning it due to poor market conditions.
With market conditions still relatively volatile – strategists such as Linus Yip advise investors a certain degree of caution.Everbright doesn’t possess that ‘novelty factor’ that Cinda does, says Mr. Yip. Reason why Everbright may have to jostle for investor attention against other listed lenders, as it joins the Hong Kong stock market from today.
