The Russian space agency said the fireball was travelling 30 km per second and although it did not kill anyone, the meteorite caused around $33 million in damage. This prompted scientists on Monday to discuss the possibility of an early warning system for the planet that would encompass telescopes and anti-asteroid missiles.

The Sunday landslide struck an area inundated by water after hours of rain. Most of the dead were buried in the mud as it swept down from hillsides above. Indonesian authorities have dispatched search and rescue teams, who are still looking for survivors across the province, which is 2,200 km north-east of Jakarta. Landslides are common in Indonesia, particularly during the country's wet season, due to illegal logging and clearing of farmland.

In the face of this barbarism, the United States has joined with nations around the world in calling for an end to the Assad regime and a transition that leads to a peaceful, inclusive and democratic Syria, where the rights of all Syrians are protected. We’ve worked to isolate Assad and his regime; impose sanctions that starve the regime of funds; recognize the Syrian Opposition Coalition as the legitimate representative of the Syrian people; call for accountability for perpetrators of atrocities; and provide humanitarian relief to Syrians in need.

The relief we send doesn’t say “Made in America,” but make no mistake — our aid reflects the commitment of the American people. American aid means food and clean water for millions of Syrians. American aid means medicine and treatment for hundreds of thousands of patients in Damascus, Dar’a and Homs. It means immunizations for one million Syrian children. Today, we’re taking another step. I’ve approved an additional $155 million in humanitarian aid for people in Syria and refugees fleeing the violence. Here, I want to speak directly to the people of Syria. This new aid will mean more warm clothing for children and medicine for the elderly; flour and wheat for your families and blankets, boots and stoves for those huddled in damaged buildings. It will mean health care for victims of sexual violence and field hospitals for the wounded. Large amounts of organic nitrogen compounds were found in Beijing smog in January, the worst month in recent years. According to a recent report by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the chemicals are believed to be the major components that killed more than 800 people in the Los Angeles photochemical smog over six decades ago.

PM 2.5 monitoring stations in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei area recorded five bouts of heavy pollution, lasting a good 22 days.

Smog persisted throughout January and returned with fresh bouts of pollution this month. Experts believe the cause for the prolonged pollution is a direct consequence of both man-made emission and disruption of natural ecological balance.

UR*7dkmc&VoW]B*!Aj

FDbC!&#THSm

The Chinese Academy of Sciences says the prolonged smog is caused by a combination of intensive coal burning, car emissions, cooking pollutants and a particular weather pattern created an inversion layer over the low-lying city.

WqyJ*oe#(lSbAONl

VZ|je|L5KW9fDEY&

Wang Yuesi, Atmospheric Physicist of Chinese Academy of Sciences, said, "Car exhaust is the primary cause in Beijing, contributing about a fourth of the air pollution. Coal fumes are the secondary cause. "

)6Q8(^!_kpREIw,_

wHIQB*ma*GEJ

Most alarming is that the Academy says they’ve found organic nitrogen particles, a key component in the deadly photochemical smog in Los Angeles in the 1950s and the Great Smog in London.

oixAEW4t8K

u_2b]qnj!^LAL

Professor Pan Xiaochuan of School Of Public Health, Peking Univ., said, "Nitrogen compounds, when reaching a higher density, could cause acute respiratory symptoms such as coughing and shortness of breath. It’s a stressor for asthma. And our clinical records show an appreciable increase in respiratory patients last month."

%Uc.Es5N]=eg1EtieumO

ooie6!o+TsDfO

But Professor Pan doubts that photochemical smog formed in Beijing. The conversion requires the presence of sunlight to form ground-level ozone. Beijing has hardly any sunlight on foggy days.

]_#tGL=buy2S]%pw_

|3O8xC-]Q5

Professor Pan Xiaochuan said, "Photochemical smog usually contains large amounts of ozone, aldehyde, and a chemical compound called PANS. The last chemical in particular has an almost tear gas effect on humans: irritated eyes, dry mouth and serious coughing. In Los Angeles, 800 people died in three or four days. In Beijing, the situation is much less severe."

MPGl(&p0rvQtaA29ZR

Z%6CTVGvFCU_xr,

But no one disputes the cause for the smog. Experts have called to reduce car emissions, and improve fuel quality. They have also suggest limiting industrial production and improving the process of coal burning so people in China can breathe easier.
